MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
Bought a '61 plate Golf from Arnold Clark VW dealership in Glasgow 3 months ago - all great right up to the point that the automatic/intermittent wipers stopped working about 2 weeks ago.
After a little investigating I noticed that the rear view mirror/rain sensor was pulling off the windscreen. So I took it to our local VW dealership today who cheerily informed me that the windscreen is not an original VW one and as such will not be covered by the VW warranty 🙁
The nice chap then carried on to say that to fix it properly would require an OEM screen and some other gubbins to be fitted - total cost £350 😯
I suspect Arnold Clark will point me in the direction of the closest lake into which I can jump. Almost wish I'd kept the old car.
Might not be covered by VW, but your contract is with Arnold Clark, and it's clearly something which was faulty when you bought the car...
Place stone on windscreen. Hit stone with hammer. Call insurance company 🙂
HTH
I'd take it to a local garage for advice, I seriously doubt you need a new wind screen as it was working before. They are just at it, as usual.
I get through a windscreen a year at the moment (seem to be pretty unlucky with stones) and the ones Autoglass use, seem to be generic.
I would guess that the warranty with VW is not so important as your contract is with the dealer and not the manufacturer. If they sold it saying that it is covered by the manufacturer's warranty for X amount of time, then they have mislead you as now they say it's not. Are they also saying they sold you a defective car (or at least a car with defective aftermarket componants)?
I suggest a call to VW customer service would probably put the dealer straight (failing that have a word with trading standards).
Hmmm, maybe Trading Standards should be contacted. Stern words ought to be had with the dealer you bought the car from, as they're a VW dealer.
Not that I'm any kind of expert, but that all sounds a bit iffy.
I bought a Puma from an independent dealer, and after a while, discovered water leaking in under the dash, around the ECU box.
They tried various things, and even got hold of a new heated screen, (which was cracked when it arrived!). The screen fitter checked before he did anything with some sort of equipment, and said the screen wasn't the issue, and it turned out to be the bulkhead plate sealing where the aircon hose and other stuff entered the car. They spent quite some time cleaning it and re-sealing it, in fact three times, before it stopped leaking, and never charged me a penny.

I agree. Some googling suggests that Loctite 319 might be the answer.
With regards to the dealer, I bought the car from Glasgow but I'm in Chester - I would have thought that the Chester dealership (who I went to) would have fixed it with some new glue as a customer relations thing. Not sure I'll take it to them for servicing now!
Unfortunately, the words Arnold and Clark are not synonymous with customer after care or indeed honest sales.
Call the original dealer?
If it's Arnold Clark they will cover it within the group if you kick up a bit of a fuss, they'll charge it internally to the other dealer. I've just done the same with a vw caddy I got from lookers when the clutch went after 3 months, I politely suggested it was a warranty problem, they disagreed, i suggested it a bit less nicely mentioning sale of goods etc and it was fixed foc.
Don't take no for an answer, if they get very fussy tell them to come and collect your car for repair.
If the repair isn't covered by VW, that's their problem, not yours. Your contract is with AC, as others have said.
you normally get a long or lifetime warranty with replacement screens if it says who fitted it. Might only apply to the original owner though.
If you do a glass claim through your insurance, they will use the likes of Autoglass who will fit a generic screen.
You can request fitting of OEM screen by the main dealer but the insurance company are likely to limit the amount that they pay to a maximum stipulated in your policy book, meaning that you'll be expected to pay the difference.
Nope, if getting autoglass or the likes to fit a new screen for autowipers you have to tell them before they arrive so they can order in a specific screen. Fell foul of this once when the autoglass guy turned up, spotted the wiper sensor, placed the order and then came back again in a few days. I'd be interested if someone knows why this is the case though. Is it something to do with the surround near the sensor?
Been trying to find out that the difference between an OEM and non-OEM screen might be - the rain sensor might be pre-fitted to OEM screens but not sure.
Either way I'm rather pee'd. If I try and fix it AC might say I'd broken it!
Edit:
Is it something to do with the surround near the sensor?
The chap at VW mentioned something about this but wasn't very knowledgeable.

I'd suggest going back and finding someone who is.
how's your swim, sharkbait?

Rain Sensors work on Light Refraction, basically if the sensor isn't as flush as it can be with the screen it wont work.
When Autoglass fitted a new screen to my Skoda Octavia they asked if it had the rain sensor. I said it did and they turned up with the proper screen and it has worked fine for last 18 months.
What have the selling retailer said about the fault that has developed and about the non VW screen? Best speak to them first before trading standards etc as you have not given them the chance to rectify the issue yet.
Emailed the dealership I bought from to see what they come back with.
It'll just need to be stuck back on properly but it's the supplying dealers issue, any fault that occurs within the first 6 months of ownership is deemed developing at the point of sale. You need to give them the opportunity to fix it. See honest John for more info.
Trading standards unlikely to be slightest bit interested.
It sounds like the screen was replaced and maybe its not the right one - but there is no fraud there and arnold clark couldn't reasonably be assumed to have done anything wrong. However they do probably have a liability under sale of goods.
Call them and explain, also it could be that the other VW garage bloke is 'misinformed'....
Hi shark bait, trading standards would be your next port of call. I am from N.Wales and know the particular dealership. They are renowned for being s***t and have a terrible reputation in the area....there is a very good independent VW garage in Ellesmere Port (can't think of where off the top of my head). If all else fails give them a try, (good for servicing too)....hope it's sorted.
