As the letter was picked up around the world, some Twitter users pointed out the letter's similarity to a research paper written by an American teacher and academic, Kimberley A Hurd.

In October last year Hurd wrote on her blog: "There are many more ways to be smart than what many schools are currently allowing. The current testing culture personally drives me crazy. It does not tell students that they matter. Tests do not always assess all of what it is that make each student special and unique. The people who create these tests and score them do not know each student the way I do, the way I hope to, and certainly not the way the families do. They do not know that some of my students speak two languages. They do not know that they can play a musical instrument or that they can dance or paint a picture. Doesn't that matter more?"

The school seemed to acknowledge debt to Hurd, retweeting a comment from someone linking to her blog.

Sounds like Kathleen Hurd's paper deserves a bit more attention, too.

If I received that letter I'd assume my child did crap on the tests...

Johnny goes up to big school. What stream should he go in? I don't know, but he once went to a really neat place and told a story about a teddy bear 😆
Bloody hippies.

Kimberley Hurd. And it's just a blog: http://seedsforlearning.blogspot.co.uk/2013_10_01_archive.html

But yes the content of the letter does seem to have been largely plagiarised from it. (Somewhat embarrassing for a letter about test results from a teacher)

The main ideas in the message to Barrowford students actually came from the blog of an American school teacher, Kimberley Hurd.
...
Tomlinson says she came across Hurd's post in November and thought, “Wow, that just really fits our philosophy. Because our philosophy here at our school is about educating the whole child.

Would have been nice if she had given due credit, but apparently Kimberley has since tweeted the school saying "the message is more important than the messenger", which is very humble of her.

And although he may hold a bit of paper saying he 'succeeded' with an A*, he still has lacks the skills to work with others, little creativity and lacks the ability to problem solve his way out a paper bag...

Streaming doesn't work, it disadvantages the able and less able.

The letter is not perfect, but it is a better vision of what learning is about, not just exam results.

Miserable barstards. Nice to see something that hasn't been generated by a machine, pulling random paragraphs to generate a notification.

You've got a lot on your plate if you fancy changing it!

I'd be more impressed with a bit of tough love
"Not only did you fail all the tests but you're also a miserable, talentless loser with no friends. And you smell"

I think they should be sending out reports tailored to each student rather than this flim-flam that's gone to every student, good, bad and dick-head.

Nice to see something that hasn't been generated by a machine

no different to the cut and paste done here.

The head was on the local news the other night.

She said, paraphrasing, "the letter wasn't original, it was from a blog on the Internet" so at least she's not passing off someone else's work as her own. Would've been nice if she'd quoted the source, though.

They don't even have the Word/Excel skills to extract the first name for a letter to 'Dear Charlie Owen', so random paragraphs are probably a little beyond them.

I agree with much of the sentiment, except for the horrible Americanisms. Not sure it belongs in such a gushy way on an official letter home. Surprised she didn't tag 'Desiderata' on the end.

Looking at the school logo, it seems to be a theme.

Well "Jerry D" sounds like a right patronising wa****** - I'm glad he is no longer a teacher!

Also he assumes that the test results were poor. So his reading comprehension needs some work too!

It's an open act of defiance, and it's aimed DIRECTLY AT YOU
We could form some kind of alliance, we could do what we wanted to do
And the young would live forever
And the sun would shine through the blue
If we got our hands on this nation, we could do what we wanted to do
