Awesome as Stringer Bell, good actor IMO but comes across as a bit of a try hard when not being a thesp.

Luther seems to me like the weakest drama ever, certainly not BAFTA quality IMHO.

I've always thought his name was probably a section of a palindromic sentence.

Excellent as Stringer Bell in The Wire. Not seen Luther, but found him very "Meh" in Prometheus and Thor (although that may be the films as much as him...)

Doesn't need to. Heimdall sees all.

Early Luther was good, later Luther was poor and too far fetched.

The Wire was great.

It's his story as much as anything else, poor east end boy (East ham Caning Town) son of immigrant parents done good ex garage/house DJ who won a place at national theatre.

Luther FWIW is brilliant, about as believable & realistic as that story about the bloke with a beard who died on a cross & then got up again but hey that seems to have run & run & run 🙂

The story goes that when he auditioned for the Wire he didn't think he'd get the part if they thought he was from Brixton, so he worked on his Baltimore accent and said he was from there. He got the part. He then stayed 'in character' for the entire first series, on and off camera, and was so convincing that none ever thought any different.

When he revealed he was actually from saaaaaarf laaaaandan, everyone was gobsmacked!

So not too shabby an actor then?

Similar with Hugh Laurie in House - the casting director assumed he was an unknown American actor when he went for the audition because his accent was so convincing.

Simply? No.

But then he's the figure head of SuperDry ATM so someone must think he's in demand...

Similar with Hugh Laurie in House

...and The Night Manager - I keep expecting him break out into a song and dance routine. And as for being menacing, er no.

I think you have to be female to really get it.
(Er, that didn't quite appear as I meant )

Probably a good actor. Haven't really seen his stuff TBH, cos I don't watch TV dramas. Find his voice a bit annoying to my poor ears, sounds like hes got permanent laryngitis. Didn't he do that Vodaphone advert voice-over? Ear pain..

Somehow, I think that's just cobblers.

Mrs Binners concurs with this. As do quite a few of my female mates

Various sources say so....

Laurie's American accent was so convincing that executive producer Bryan Singer, who was unaware at the time that Laurie was British, pointed to him as an example of just the kind of compelling American actor he had been looking for.

I think in fairness to Idris, the characters he played in Prometheus and Thor were both pretty low key roles. There is only so much an actor/actress can do to enhance the scenes and dialogue of a film character!

Personally, I think he would make a great James Bond, very much in contrast to Sir Roger's views a while back.

He's East not South, like somebody saying he's Yorkshire when from Lancs.

Apologies. If it's in more than one place on the internet, then it must be true.

Personally, I found his german accent in Blackadder 2 and 4 more convincing.

I'll put it on Wikipedia to make it a fact.

That's Tom Hiddleston you're thinking of.

Rather have Idris Elba than the endless supply of toffs we have dominating the acting profession in this country.

Plus, as mentioned previously, he was Stringer Bell FFS!!

Anyone conceited enough to make a program called Idris Elba: King Of Speed and then show themselves to be as mediocre at driving as the rest of us can just about blummin well do one, for my money.

If he's anything like Hugh Laurie he'll be making a Blues album next, or two :
