It was from the early 80's I think, an instrumental track and had some very crude early computer like beeping as the main melody. Seem to remember the name of the track or the band was foreign sounding and the video was cartoon like with lots of lines.

Heard in on a BBC4 program about the history of the top 40, but they didn't say what it was.

I also seem to remember 'Chad' (the top of a head and fingers poking above a wall) being around the same time, but I could be wrong.
STW hive mind - name that song!

This is where Shazam comes in handy. Sorry, I don't recall the video, but I'm sure the STWiki will work it's usual magic. 😀

That's what I thought, but video doesn't match OP's description.

I thought that too, then thought about something like this.

Probably well wrong, but well worth a listen.

Blimey. You've not given us a lot to go on here! Any more info?

The only thing that springs to mind could be Rockit by Herbie Hancock.

Not foreign sounding name tho, sorry.

This was what I was watching, good program and brought back many memories of recording songs during Sunday afternoon chart shows!

Wasn't that the tune from The Great Egg Race?

Best science programme ever and Prof Heinz Wolf is a legend!

Bloody heck, Popcorn was the last thing I would have thought of! Possibly the very first use of a synthesiser on a hit single, IIRC.

Chicory Tip's hit pre-dated Hot Butter's Popcorn by about 6 months, CZ.

Yes! I was the youngest ever competitor on that, I was about 10 I guess, I've still got an engraved spatula about somewhere 😉

Great Escape style? No, last used it for measuring out some powder to make thermite 😉

Trampus, I wasn't sure, that's why I said 'possibly'. I remember the Chickory Tip single, but the Hot Butter one is the one that I remember clearly. I haven't heard either for donks, being a committed 6Music listener. 😀

Both of them were covers from the previous year anyway, CZ. The originals didn't chart, at least not in this country. Synths probably appeared on a lot of prior stuff, just not so prominently! (George Martin being an early adaptor):)

Edit: Daft obvious question. . .did the Dr. Who theme ever chart?
