For some reason Gmail keeps telling me my icloud username or password is incorrect, even though neither are.

I've tried deleting and setting up the account again, with no luck. My icloud account still works fine on my Macbook and via the cloud online.

This only started this morning. It's been fine for the two years I've had the phone (MotoG 3gen).

Any ideas?

They have implemented device authentification lately ... so you need to go to iCloud and then allow the phone access (it just sends a passcode you type in)

You could try just going to iCloud.com on the phone browser and sign-in (or try to).

(Sorry, can't be more specific but I had to do something on this but can't remember exactly what except you get a code sent...and it then authorises the device).

It seems to have been progressively introduced ... in that I mean for different services... so you had to do this on Apple devices for a while for some stuff...and I don't access my iCloud account from my work android

Now it sends an email saying "x-device" has been authenticated (or such) so I'm guessing that they have previously not required the device authentication for email (POP/IMAP) but now do....

Apparently by phone browser isn't compatible with the Icloud.

You probably need an app specific password for iCloud access by a non-apple device. You will need the use of a desktop machine to do this. Details here

Top tip have pen and paper to hand to note password down, there is no practical way to recover this after you accept it on iCloud.

I've gone there and there's no option to setup app specific passwords.

Ok Here's the by the hand method.

Sign into your iCloud account.

Choose 'Settings'

Under Appleid choose the manage link

Sign in again!!

Use the Generate Password link in the second section to do what needs to be done.

Note down password for use in the app.

Robert is your mothers or fathers brother.

Try this info:

Log in to appleid.apple.com
Click Generate Password in the Security section
Give the app-specific password a name of your choosing (e.g. Fantastical)
Switch to Fantastical and click Cancel on any errors that appear
Open Fantastical preferences and select the Accounts tab
Select your iCloud account and click Change App-Specific Password…
Paste the app-specific password you generated into the prompt

Click Generate Password in the Security section

Thanks for the input but there is nothing coming up that says anything about "Generate Password"

Have you turned on Two-Factor Authentication for your AppleID?

..or if on iOS

Ah, no. No one mentioned anything about that. I'll do it tomorrow.

Basically on June 15th Apple made it mandatory for third party apps to use a app specific password. The only way you can get one of these, as you've found out, is to have Two Factor Authentication turned on.

More info here:

https://www.macrumors.com/2017/05/16/third-party-apps-passwords-icloud-access/

....but follow either of the guides I linked above and you should be ok.
