What an awesome country. Went without bikes unfortunately, but I did get to see the Northern Lights, albeit not particularly brightly. Just so massively different to anywhere I've ever been before.

Went in January, it was dark! I had been before 6-7 years ago in summer time where I saw more of the island.

As expected the large group tour included in the package wasn't much cop, went snorkelling in a freshwater lake which had a lit Xmas tree in.

Did the "golden circle" tour but we had a private guide for this, did a lot of extras you wouldn't see or do on a normal tour.

The Blue Lagoon is well done, had an enjoyable day there too.

The people and environment is nice but not sure I would want to live there.

Yeah, loved Iceland. The mountain taxi is great. I got out somewhere up in the mountains and disappeared up to my arse in the snow. Turns out I have a heavier footprint than a 2 tonne 4x4.

Agree on visiting rather than living there. We couldn't work out how most people had jobs, there doesn't seem to be enough industry for them all.

Wow, just this minute looking at expedia, and thinking if booking a week at the end of august.

How much would a meal out be there ? An equivalent to ya nice normal Brit pub grub.

Also, how much is a pint of beer/ glass of wine?

Cheers

Wish we'd had your weather! Well we did, but only for 30" at a time... Love the place.

Prices weren't that scary when we went (June 2011) - £15/head for a decent meal and pint.

It is a great place, agreed, not sure about the industry either. although if you stay a night near the airport you'll see that it is a pretty industrial town Keflavik - please note, I wouldn't recommend this. Our flight plans changed and ended up being here for longer than intended, not the best part of the island to visit.

I spent the evening in Kafinbarinn (Damon Albarn's bar) there was a farmer in for a night out in the city dishing out coke from his bank card, so perhaps not all forms of money making are traditional and quaint.

It's not cheap, but neither is Cambridge so it felt a lot like being at home and going out every night cost wise.

SAD cars I used these guys for car hire and they actually were pretty cheap, not the flashest looking cars, but also not fussy about them either.

Heading out at the end of summer, got the flights booked, but not the accommodation or activities yet. Snorkelling and waterfalls definitely in as well as the viking village and blue lagoon.

Got three weeks in august. 2 weeks walking and a week horse rinding across the centre. Looking forward to it quite a lot. 30th bday present as both my wife and I are 30 this year.

Beautiful country, if a bit barren.
More people live in Cardiff, then in Iceland 🙂

Hotel Cabin in Reykjavik is pretty cheap and seemed nice enough. Hotel Dyrholaey near Vik seemed fine too, and is good for seeing the Northern Lights as it's very dark. I thought where I lived was pretty dark, but the number of stars out there is unreal.

I like the place very much but there is one problem there are no trees to be seen.

Tough riding with lots of headwind and relatively sparse opportunities to re-stock with food. Kjoller route (D35?) through interior was good, as was north coast (riding the tunnels was a bit hairy) and and NW fjordland.
