I'm amazed that commercial Gold mines operate with such low density. Maybe watching all those old Westerns where prospectors found nuggets has set an unrealistic expectation!

For 18 months in Western Australia my job was to go down old mine workings map and sample them, the usual figure they would dig for was 4oz per ton of ground moved, when I left the big mines were going in at a gramme a ton, depends of the price of gold.
