As for bikes, same as cars. A cheap one will get you about, an old one can be lovely and still get you about. A modern, decent standard bike will tend to be nicer to ride and own. Surely you can see the correlation?
Well, this thread is an excellent example of why driving on British roads is such an infuriating process. I wonder how many of you would actually pass a driving test today. ****s.
Due to the fact my 25 mile A road journey home tonight being carried out at between 35 and 40 mph due to the fields having a covering of snow i’d say not.

I didn't drive today so all was good in my world.
I feel we're all winners here.
Driving can be fun. Not always, not often but it can be.

Been waiting for that one. 😀
FWIW I agree. 🙂
During yesterday mornings two hour drive to visit my sons, I had an OAP in an Agila pull out of a junction straight towards me and only just missed a head on. Then an HGV in lane 1 decided without indicating that he'd stay in that lane all way round the roundabout despite exiting at the three o'clock position. I'd been taken out by an HGV a few years back doing the same. This time flooring it got me out of his way.
Not looking forward to this morning's commute in the snow. Thankfully my winter tyres are on.
Stay safe out there. There are some looons on the road!!
If you are happy running old cars then good for you. Some of us prefer something a bit nicer that should require less maintenance.
FIL is a semi-retired mechanic. We just pay trade price for parts and no labour. Would be trickier with some more modern cars. Tyres for my car cost less than my bike tyres. I don’t think your average Audi or BMW is that cheap to run, although I could be mistaken.
As for bikes, I agree to a degree. I own (well used to) nuce hardtails. Simpler, easier and cheaper to maintain than full suss.
The reason I can’t see the correlation is that cars to me, as explained before, are for doing one utterly boring job. I’m going to spend as little as possible to get said job done. If I could do without one I happily would.
Keep the arguments coming this is great fun!
A car is nothing more than a tool for transport.
Driving experience? Do one, Clarkson.
Pushing on? Hop it, Tiff Needell
body coloured bumpers? Do me a favour, Ruby Wax

Thats lovely.
Others want to spend a bit more, shock horror people have different opinions and wants out of life.
Blimey quick scan of some of the belligerent attitudes on this thread makes for a depressing read. You lot really need to grow up a bit. No wonder the roads are such an unpleasant place to be these days when people with such petty childish attitudes are behind the wheels of cars 🙁

Hence the ‘I’m going to spend ‘ and ‘for me’ parts of my previous posts. Statements in response to a post that claimed jealousy. Others decided to try and make an argument from it. I don’t rightly care what others do with their money. Why should I?

No cars are nice places to be.
You can't stand up, can't lie down, can't nap, can't et cetera et cetera.
It's testament to the evils of marketing that so many people have been hoodwinked into spending so much money on such a crap activity.
It's turd polishing of the highest order, and if people want to improve the quality of their lives they would do better to realise this and cease spunking increasing amounts of cash on the rapidly diminishing returns of car ownership and instead adjust their lifestyles to drive less and enjoy the rest of life more.
that should require less maintenance.
Peak reliability was achieved in 1992 with the release of the MkII Nissan Micra.
Never, ever seen a Hyundai i10 driven within 15mph of the speed limit. Ever. ****.
You’ve clearly never been overtaken by me, on the rare occasion I’ve driven one, then. I’ve got an i30 outside at the moment, though.
I’ve had a Skoda Citigo 35mph over the motorway speed limit, though, and a Smart fourtwo twenty five over the motorway speed limit.
According to my satnav, anyway.

Likewise. I’m just glad the majority of my driving is in and out of Cornwall and Devon, but I regularly see knobs like the OP squatting in the middle lane pootling along at 55-60, with an empty inside lane, and faster vehicles passing in the outside lane, and me having to brake because they refuse to move across.
I could be driving a BMW, I could also be driving a LWB 3.5 ton van like I’m picking up tomorrow, a Vauxhall, a Nissan, a Merc, Hyundai, VW, Audi, Range Rover, Maserati...
I regularly drive around 300 miles a day, five days a week, and pricks like the OP do nobody any good whatsoever.
Is my sincere hope he loses his licence one day soon for behaving like an asshole.
Oh, and I stick to an indicated 80, roughly 74-75 on motorways, the same sort of speed the police drive at, my job is too important to me to risk getting points for driving faster, although there have been a couple of occasions when I’ve been a little...enthusiastic!
I drive a BMW and I never, ever give way to buses. Never.
This thread is hilarious. Could those who hate cars and hate driving please give me the official list of what it’s acceptable to the righteous to enjoy? You seem very convinced that your opinion is the only one that matters so it would be helpful for the ignorant masses to have a defined good/bad reference point.

Christ. I freely admitted to being petty... I don't drive like a loon over the speed limit however. Nice boast.
One hell of a chip on your shoulder there bud. 🙂
You need to drive less I reckon, doing your anger management no good at all...
6/10 for the personal attacks by the way. Try harder. 😉

I love *cars and love driving but have given up the pleasure to make up, environmentally, for those that can or do not.
I've literally atoned for your sins.
I'm basically **Jesus.
*V8s FTW.

Whose God?
"I stick to an indicated 80, roughly 74-75 on motorways"
Yeah, we are in the presence of a driving god who knows better. There is a law, stick to it please.
Amusing isn't it? Slagging others off and admitting to being an unacceptable driver in the same post. 🙄
Whose God?
The driving God

Ganesh or Baal?
Say what you like, all stereotypes have an element of truth. Thats how they come to exist.
Like brits being aggressive and ignorant.

I'm with The Count. Better to be driving over the speed limit, concentrating and fully aware of what is happening ahead, behind and alongside you than bimbling along at 65, oblivious to your surroundings.
Be sure to flash him for at least 30 seconds as he dares to overtake you...
Deciding which one of the two drivers driving badly is the least dangerous is stupid as driving within the law and paying attention is the best option
If you want to risk your own life **** of to the track where you can show how awesome / attentive you are
^^my sentiments exactly. Nothing worse than awesome drivers. I don’t care how good you are, you’re sharing the road with a whole host of other, unpredictable people.
Like brits being aggressive and ignorant.
Overly polite and showing humour in the face of adversity are the British stereotypes I’m aware of. Saddens me somewhat if the above is true beyond the football crowd
"I stick to an indicated 80, roughly 74-75 on motorways"
You can get points for that on a lot of motorways now.
I just stick to 70mph in a 70mph zone. I was on a long journey a couple of years ago with a lot of stuff in the car and rack. A mate with me kept saying "speed up speed up". "Get past that car, get past this car". No, sorry its my licence and i kinda need it. The top speed in my car is apparently 127mph. Why on earth is that necessary on UK roads.

Times have changed.
Times have changed.
British diplomacy has given way to aggressive competitive disorder. Everyone needs to do everything quickly, and be front of someone else doing it. Woe betide you if you get in the way of that...

That explains the driving then.
I’ve had a Skoda Citigo 35mph over the motorway speed limit
I've had my Renault Twingo 50 mph over the limit on a deserted road in the middle of the night, obviously. I also get lots of approving thumbs up from other Renault drivers. I also like to drop Audis.
Keeping teen2 to the speed limit on his L plates is another matter 🙄
I dropped an E bike (barely) in the agila once. 😉

That might be a valid point, if it wasn’t for the fact that pretty much every car made for the last twenty - twenty-five years has had body-coloured bumpers, because theyre all painted plastic, not chromed steel!

Just because it's popular doesn't make it a sensible choice. If a neighbour's bin fell on my leased BMW and it had plastic grey bumpers then I'd not be too fussed

If I had to guess, I'd say painted plastic bumbers are responsible for at least 10% on all our insurance premiums 🙁
Couldnt be bothered reading the whole thread....
But taxis? why are they allowed to use bus lanes? why does someone paying someone else to drive them around get priority over someone driving themselves? buses sure they have more people on etc but taxis?
I treat everyone in every car as a **** that way you just expect them to do something stupid/dangerous then its a nice surprise when they dont for once.
I have a neat feature on my car to prevent people getting too close, if I dip the clutch and rev it to 7-8k then let go it shoots flames at whoever is behind me 😆
