I'm an android fanboi these days and can't remember how to free up space on an iPhone. Mothers got 3gb of photos on a 16gb iPhone and can't do anything now as the phone is saying no memory left.

As cougar says...

Then you can set up the cloud stuff to upload the pics when taken and delete the local copies

Indeed, it’s not complicated but does take a little time.

One issue is mail, it stores copies of mails on you device in a “cookies” type manner and documents and photos. So you’ll need to delete the mail accounts and re-load the accounts (go through setup process again) that will clear down a lot of memory.

Then use the cloud for all files (unless you want to keep a few on the device)

And music, and photos.

Common problem, easy fix.

I believe there is an option to store photos in iCloud rather than on the phone, you may need to purchase additional storage but this is worth doing IMO, something like 80p/month

If it is has a relatively recent version of iOS (11, I think) then you can go to Settings->General->Storage and you'll have options to enable "iCloud Photo Library" (which uploads all photos and video to iCloud and deletes the local copies) and "Offload Unused Apps" which ditches apps you don't use but keeps their data in case you decide you need them.

The first option will likely free up the most space, but is only useful if you have enough space on iCloud (may need to pay) and you don't mind photos being stored off the device.

Using iCloud surely means you'll eat data to view/download photo's when not on wifi?

Yes the 3gb can be done easily but when we get back from holiday. The 9gb of other seems a little over the top.
