Just popped out for a stroll to get some fresh air at lunchtime. Nipped down to a rather nice park near where I'm working. A car (Citroen Cactus) pulls up by the cafe and you can hear dogs barking inside. 2 women and a bloke get out of the car. We're talking trackies and Ugg boots, not Hunter wellies and Barbour. Theres a hell of a lot of barking. Blokey walk round the back, opens the boot and a dog jumps out. Then another. Then another. Then another. In all they had 9 dogs in the back of the (small) car - one Alsatian and 8 French Bulldogs.

They had no leads or anything with them, so not a dog walking bunch. They just opened the gate, and let them run off around the park

Looks well iffy. I'm thinking as they were (nearly) all one breed, they're a dodgy breeder.

I took a few pictures, including one with the car number plate visible

So what do I do? Worth giving the RSPCA a call? You really shouldn't have 9 dogs in a (small) car boot, should you? And the casual way they went about this made me think this wasn't a one off event.

We all know the real reason you went out for some fresh air. How many portions of pigs in blankets from Greggs did you get?

I would't do anything about the dogs in all honesty.

Hunters are as chavvy as UGG boots. Anyways french bulldog is the chavvy dog of choice currently (thanks to instagram I’d guess) so I’d imagine it’s a local dog walking business

howsyourdad1 - I'm being posh this week. Theres a rather nice little independent bakery up the road from where I am, so no pigs in blankets, but really good sausage rolls 😀

I'm not a dog owner ( as my cats wouldn't aprove) so 9 dogs in a car boot seemed a bit much. I did wonder just exactly how bad it must have smelt with 9 dogs in it? 😳

Mind my own business? What exactly has been done wrong here other than you displaying an epic level of prejudice?

Dunno. Thats why I asked.

Not a dog person myself, so like I said: 9 dogs in a car boot seemed a bit much to me. Apparently not, so all's at one with the world.

... apart from the unholy smell of wet dog - the very worst smell in the world - from the car upholstery, obvs. I don't even want to imagine how stinky that interior is

Give the details to RSPCA/SSPCA. Even if they aren't dodgy breeders then it sounds like they need some pointers on care and handling.
Were the dogs securely restrained by a harness, dog cage or dog guard in the car?
If not then give the local fuzz the reg number as well. 9 dogs loose in the back of a car would make a hell of a mess of themselves if the eejit driving hit the back of something.

Fair enough then.

dunno about car boot space but the fact that there are 9 dogs all off the lead, I'd give the RSPCA a call anyway, then it's their info to decide whether important or not.

Dogs off lead shocker. I'd ring the Daily Mail while you're at it.

Seriously - wtf? Complete STW over-reaction. There's no cruelty issue in having x number of dogs or in letting them off the lead (in fact I'd argue dogs need free running exercise and it's unfair walking them only on a lead), so why would the RSPCA be interested?? Different story if they were all malnourished and in a terrible state, but no evidence of that in the OP.

As for 9 dogs in a car - meh. They might of only been in there 2 mins to get them from home to safe walking area and i'd be judging on how happy / healthy the dogs looked rather than some arbitrary formula for how many dogs can fit in a particular model of car.

As for the question as to whether they are “breeders” then SFW? The ‘orrible puppy farming types wouldn’t bother exercising them. Breeding dogs isn’t a crime. I’d suggest you do nothing. No organisation would be interested in the info you have given us.

We're not allowed calendars with puppies on them.

Apparently it's "sexist"

Dogs are supposed to be tethered/restrained in a car:

Oh dear, just discovered something. I'm supposed to restrain my dog in the car.

Bit difficult seeing as she's bigger than some humans.

But seeing as it's law, I'd better do it. Any recommendations for a suitable restraint/harness? (I've never seen one that would come close to fitting her.)

As for putting a dog in the boot, I used to do that with my Great Dane in Australia.

Car (Fairlane) had a big boot with a mattress for her, and she'd happily lie there with her head sticking out between the back seats perfectly positioned to get the breeze from the airconditioner. It was priceless watching folks faces when I'd open the boot and a huge Great Dane would step out.

Doggy folk in minding their own business and taking their dogs for a walk shocker.

You shouldn't have 9 unrestrained dogs in a car. Not good for the dogs in a crash and not good for the driver and passenger who would be hit by 9 dogs in said crash.

Presumably kids shouldn't need to use seatbelts in the back of the car either?

Well if you put the kids in the boot then no I can't see any issues

Who said anything about them being unrestrained? A dog guard is considered enough. The fact that they jumped out of the boot and didn't all pile out of the drivers door would suggest they were restrained.

So...
They (probably) haven't broken any road laws
They (probably) are not breeders
They are allowed to walk dogs in a park, even if they have 9.

They don't appear to have done anything wrong apart from upset Binners sensitivities and judgement.

Some places have local by-laws on the number of dogs you can walk at one time. Burnham Beeches is one. Presumably to limit professional dog walkers.

Ours lives in a cage in the boot, but a dog guard is sufficient separation in a vehicle.

I don’t see the outrage here. So what of they are breeders? Aren’t breeders allowed to exercise or socialise their dogs too?

its been a while since this particular aspect of law has crossed my radar, but I've got a distant memory of there being a 'working assumption' that six was the maximum number of pets a household can have to be considered as a normal part of 'the residential enjoyment of a dwellinghouse', beyond that number you would be considered to be undertaking some form of commercial activity and require the necessary consents from planning & licencing perspectives

To be fair to me, I possess neither.

So, doggy people, getting back to the original question: what's the maximum amount of dogs you'd put in a car boot? 12? 15? 53?

They were unrestrained

There were 3 people and 9 dogs in a (probably very very smelly) car. No restraints of any sort. No cage. No leads when the dogs were out of the car.

Binners sensitivities

I've never met young bin bins, but Mail reading and sensitive? SRSLY? Is this your first time on STW?

They’d probably be even healthier if they walked the two minute drive to the local park to evacuate their bowels. Presumably if it’s only two minute’s drive it’s only a minute or two longer walk?

In an age where climate change is headline news every night (and last night I drove through the earliest snowfall I’ve ever seen!) thinking it acceptable to use your car for such a short journey is ridiculous.

By the morbidly obese appearance of them all I very much doubt they'd done much walking recently

Ok, next question. And one for all these dog walking businesses as well.

If said dogs (9, or whatever) are off the lead out in the park, I'd question if the adults in charge are going to be able to scoop up all the inevitable dog poo into their little bags..

They opened the gate to the park, let the dogs off to runaround and shit everywhere and closed the gate while they all stood by the car having a fag. I think its safe to say there was no poopy scooping going to be going on

Ah well, here's the new conundrum. That's why they weren't on leads. Imagine juggling 9 leads and 9 or so poo bags? And trying to spark up a Mayfair/Benson?

Bensons used to be the benchmark of a quality snout in the playground. Are you saying they no longer are?

Now we're getting to the crux of it.

It wasn't horror at the mistreatment of animals.

It was jealousy because they were shamelessly smirkin' tabs.

My step-daughter (former ROW officer if that makes any difference - probably not) always used to quote some regulation or other that deemed more than 5 dogs a pack, and as such you weren't allowed to walk more than 5 dogs in a group at any one time.

Which proved interesting as she had 5 springers and we had another 2.

That my be local by-law rather than national regs though.

Aye, cos walking 9 dogs in a public park with no leads is no one else's business but theirs.

nah, I think that's tabs*? If they still do 5 packs. I'm a bit out of the loop.

How many dogs can you fit in a car boot?

Is this like one of those people-in-a-Mini records that used to be on the TV?
I'm not sure it'd work with dogs. Sooner or later a fight's going to break out involving a lot of snarling and teeth. Followed by lots of blood.
I wouldn't want to be the person trying to squeeeze just one more dog in after that had happened.
