The stupid cat walked over my keyboard and switched on something which means everytime I hover over a menu in Firefox, it speaks what it is. How do I switch this feature off?

Ah, Geoff; sounds like your clever cat has enabled Voice Over by treading on Cmnd+F5. 😀
Press the same key combo to turn it off. It can also be accessed in System Preferences>Universal Access.
