rip'em and then re-encode them.

All software and stuff on the interweb.

Or you can rip as an .iso and then use a program such as acetoneISO to play them via a virtual DVD drive - which skips the encoding and means you have the DVD stored in a format that makes it easy to reburn to a blank DVD in the future.

MPEG Streamclip or Handbrake. Handbrake seems to work better for dvds with copy protection (so most of them).

You can't just "copy" the DVD like you would with say simple data files stored on a CD, DVD or other media. You need to use a specific piece of software that will create a playable file for you. If you search the Web you'll be able to find some free (and some not so free) programs that will let you do this and create the file that you want. Handbrake is one that I've used but it is more geared towards Mac friendly formats rather than WMV files that are used by Windows Media Player.

Another thing that you will need is some form of copy protection hack. I've used one by slysoft that runs in the background and removes the copy protection from a DVD and lets you use another program to create the playable file.

Personally I wouldn't do what waderider suggests. ISO files are great but they take up a huge amount of space and as you are going to be watching these files on a small laptop screen you won't notice any loss of quality.

Easiest way:

Install DVD43. It runs in the background. You don't need to do anything.

Then install Handbrake. Use the "classic" default setting. "Encode" (save/rip) the DVD to your HD.

Once saved, you can play it with iTunes, whatever. But actually VLN is a much "thinner" i.e. less resource-intensive, faster player: http://www.videolan.org/

DVD Fab here. will shrink to many different formats for mobile devices or if you stay in the native DVD format, allows you to keep or remove menus, extras, subtitles, soundtracks etc and shrink to fit a standard DVD or keep full size. it also downloads a DVDXML file so mediacenter can automatically download meta data and cover art to display in DVD Library like this

Ooh, DVD Fab looks like it could be quite good.

Handbrake is not so polished but it is free.

DVDShrink, handbrake and AnyDVD are all key bits of software for me.

A fair point from Gonefishin, I didn't think of that downside as I'm coming down with hard drive space.

(Why am I posting on such an old thread?.....just back from 5 days MTBing in West Scotland :-))
