My right Achilles tendon is quite tight atm. Any time I'm sitting down for a while (which is often), or in bed, getting up it feels really stiff. Been that way for a while, although it's fine once I'm up and about.
Trouble brewing? Or no biggie and I should just do some stretches?
Go see a doc or a physio. That's coming from someone who has suffered with pretty chronic tendinitis for the past 3 years. Usually a bit of rest and it'll be fine though.
Although they'll probably suggest you do some stretching, so you might as well start with that now 🙂
I'd probably want to warm up a bit first, short walk or cycling would be fine.
I had real issues with my achilles, had been noticing a niggly pain for a while then on a ski trip it really flared up - I'd be ok during the day but in the evenings I could barely walk. Went to see a podiatrist and he said my feet had incredibly high arches that were basically collapsing - extreme pronation or flat feet as it's more commonly known. took about 2 or 3 months of regular physio to get everything settled, in that time I wasn't doing any sports (I would normally have been playing volleyball and frisbee as well as cycling) so did lose quite a bit of fitness. Once the inflammation had been sorted and it was under control he made me some custom insoles to support my arches. I wear them all the time and haven't had any issues since then - that was back in 2005
The mrs did hers while running. Nothing unusual in that she runs a fair bit but this time she went a bit further than usual after a week off.
Mentioned that it was 'obtrusive' when she got back and within a few hours it was inflamed & obv something was wrong. Used ice and rest for a while and tried some gentle stretches after a few days but this one couldn't be teased out.
Professional advice suggested high arches and a very heel-heavy walk/run
Probably 6 months or so before it was properly 'right' and it's been ok since she started running on her toes instead of her heels.
I had a total rupture playing squash with what seemed like "a bit of a tight calve muscle" A hell of a mis reading of the problem. It was the end of my career as an average squash player.
Not sure how I got Achilles Tendonitis. But I rode through it until winter then saw the Physio. I had screwed my Achilles which then tore my calve muscle. It was not nice and neither was Physio!
Doctor will be useless, at least mine was. Make an appointment with a Physio specialist, it took me over a year to recover and it's now been 4 years and sometimes it still goes tight. They will show you the correct stretches and activities to be doing.
