Just been replacing 2 ball valves for the coil and water tank.
Been getting a tickly throat from the dust so my mask was naff!
Is it dangerous?
Water tank has some dirt at the bottom too.
Usually fatal tickling throat means death is imminent.
Oh it will but you won't know it. 👿
Imminent death is preceded by delusions of living to 120 and having sex with some mutton bunny woman. 😉
Depends on what's in the dust. Slate roof with no roof felt? (That'll be silicosis starting 😕 )
Fibreglass fibres are generally harmless but the research is in it's early stages. Irritation should go soon.
There was someone theorising that the fibres are very similar to asbestos in that rockwool stuff, in that they are very fine fibrous things that can get right into your lungs. Bit of a worry that I thought having just ripped a ceiling down and put a load of the stuff in the resultant cavity.
Thanks Sandwich & Co, I've just read it can be dangerous in long periods.
I wore a dust mask but had dirt in my mouth and nose! Last time I'm going up there without a Darth Vadar mask.
Lol@Bruneep.
Best to put a really good mask on and seal it round the edges with gaffer tape, dont forget an all in romper suit, and gloves, try not to breathe in to much.
As for dirt in the water tank, possibly rat shit,as they climb upwards,to crap.
No rats in there and the tank is sealed :O)
The rats was a joke
To my mind fibreglass insulation is less dangerous than dust masks that don't work.
The disposable dust masks I use cost £15 a pop. And they work. Preferable to a box of 50 for a fiver (the same ones you'll get of B&Q for a couple of quid each) that don't work.
rockwool has completely different morphology to asbestos, so that's cack, (from a professionals point of view) you'll get mechnical irritaion from coarse fibre exposure for a short duration. If you were wearing a "nuisance dust mask" obtained froma DIY store then what do you expect? that's why there is a requirement for RPE suitable for use and face fitted to users in an industrial context. At least look for a mask with a rating of FFP2 or above for next time.
Ok ok I won't go up there without a pro mask!
I was just worried about the damage to my lungs.
didn't mean to freak you out. don't worry the fibres are too large to get to your lungs, they'll have stuck in your mucal membranes in your upper respiratory tract, you'll probably have a couple of ikky gob outs in the morning and then it'll all be nice again. 😀
Phew ok I was worried about cancer etc
but could cope with a morning snort! 😡
Learned my lesson tazzmtb and anybody else going up there, get a decent mask.
When I was a kid, I hid under a pile of loft insulation while playing hide and seek! The skin irritation went after a few days, and I'm still alive 30 years later, so you may be ok.
What you really want to worry about is all the carbon fibre nano tubes relased into the air when you cut down carbon bars, steerers or seatposts. There was some research recently to suggest they could be the new asbestos.
My tip is try hold your breath next time you crash and snap your carbon bars 😉
Cancels plans to insulate loft with carbon nanotubes 🙂
I'll never buy carbon again.
Till next summer!
I always hoped I'd die at 120 while having sex with some playboy bunny!
poor her 🙁
my dust mask cost the company £72 ❓
