Been looking at an Africa Twin with DCT
Anybody any feedback on them? Some good deals around on the 2019 model as the 2020 one is completely new

Work colleague has one with DCT - he likes it, he's a plodder rather than a ragger if that matters?

From those I know that have owned or at least ridden them, the consensus seems to be that it's a superb system for touring, especially two up. But for more "enthusiastic" riding , the box can get a bit confused at times and change gear right where you might not want it to (ie. mid corner).

This is why IMO so many modern bikes are still coming with a conventional box but with a quickshifter (and often autoblipper) fitted now, perceived as a "best of both worlds" half way house, if a little mechanically unsympathetic answer...

You mean tradition. The same way as we as a nation have a huge reluctance to go auto in cars because the human always knows best....despite most crashes being human error.

Love it. Struggling to buy another brand of bike, because want all my bikes to have DCT. Don't know how I ever managed in town before...the motorway is also much less of a ball ache. DO it.

My neighbours pal has a VFR1200 with DCT. He thinks it’s brilliant. But he has got a wooden left leg and can’t operate a normal gear shifter with it so he might be biased.

despite most crashes being human error.

I don't think many crashes are down to poor gear changes.

I had a DCT Twin and swapped it for a manual when I changed. The manual is brilliant, it has a lovely box and a light clutch but I’ll go back to a DCT when I change it.

The DCT is just better, off road as well as on - it’s a brilliant gearbox. I thought I would really miss a clutch on slow manoeuvres but I rarely did. At times, where you’d ride/cover a clutch on slow moves you just ride it like a scooter and use a bit more throttle and drag a bit of rear brake. Again, we’re talking less than 1% of your riding and it’s the only thing that takes any time to get used to. Other than that, it takes about a mile before you think that really it’s going to take no getting used to whatsoever.

You can run the DCT in drive, sport or manual. The sport has three levels you can choose from and on the highest level it really holds on to a gear without changing up. Sports also the better option in town IMO.

Although the 2020 bike has a sensor to stop the bike changing up mid corner, it’s really not an issue - it happens so occasionally and when it does it’s not upsetting at all.
