Working happily on some stuff and the landline rang. Answered the call and it seems to have killed the Internet. Router has a red light in status and the Internet flashes red. Tried unplugging the phone, no difference. Rebooted the router, no difference. HELP!!!

Sounds like the ADSL filter.

Use a filter until OpenReach can attend.

Cheers guys, I'll put a new filter in. Happily enough the fault resolved itself after an hour or so.

For the record I had probs with broadband drops caused by phone calls after an ADSL upgrade to high speed. No changes to wiring at my end and it still occurred with all the talky phone components disconnected and ADSL in the master. But there was an old unused second socket and for some reason this wiring caused enough instability in the newer higher speed broadband signal to throw it out of sync. Engineer chopped the old cable and now it’s fully stable.

So unplug all the phone bits, connect to master and see if it still occurs when you dial your home phone number as it could be a wiring problem in which case they can send an engineer.

The microfilter doesn't protect the DSL from the phone, it protects the voice from the DSL. It's probably a coincidence.

Happily enough the fault resolved itself after an hour or so.

QED.

For the record

Entirely different scenario and one of the most common causes of DSL issues with new installs / upgrades. I can explain your "for some reason" if you care sufficiently.

You could stick it on here ‘for the record’ ( many of my internet searches bring me back here it’s that good ) but I’m all sorted thanks. Not sure what’s entirely different, just offering an explanation of my experience of home phone killing broadband.
