OK - some of you have read my thread about a stolen/recovered Vespa - see below:

Over £1k of damage has been done, possible more. Would be worth £2k pre theft. I have fully comp insurance with £200 excess. Not yet reported theft to insurance.

My dilemma is I'm picking up this on Monday:

It's a 1200cc Triumph Bobber Black with a few custom bits added.

I've never had to claim on insurance before. It's my first big bike (had full licence 25 years) that I've owned but ridden a few off and on over the years. Is it worth claiming on my Vespa insurance or will I be absolutely screwed when I insure the Triumph?

Need the collective wisdom of STW - what would you do?

Are you making a claim on the Vespa ?.

It's as simple as that. If you do , declare it, and pay the price. If you can swallow the money to fix it, (it can be cheaper than you think) then say nothing and save on the highway robbery for the Triumph.
I'd fix that Vespa myself.

How long is your no claims record?

Based on my no claim theft with my kwaker (third party only and I recovered it myself) you’ll pay extra anyway, may not be masses, but you’ll have to report the theft anyway. Mind you I went from an old bike to the most stolen 250 scooter in the UK!

Master key for Vespa found. Garage reckons £500 to repair. So, I’m not claiming on insurance and will sort directly.

Thanks all for your help

How much of that is cosmetic? Personally I would keep the bike, claim off insurance and not fix it. giving you money to put towards the new bike

None of it is cosmetic - wiring, ignition etc. Insurance excess is £300 so I don’t think it’s worth claiming given likely premium that would add to the Triumph.

I’m happy with the outcome - well, happy is not the right word!
