Right. Our home PC is Windows XP 32 bit and after receiving a warning from Strava that IE8 won't be supported after 30th Nov, what do I do - IE9/10 isn't supported on XP 32bit (I tried).

Chrome works so that's the get out of Jail free card for now. But in attempting the upgrade I've realised our PC is 6 years old - don't really have the funds for a new one.

It is a 2.4ghz, 32mbRAM, 1.GB remaining disk space so not a good idea to bin it as its still usuable, but can I upgrade to a new "Windows" - if so what?

Whats my best move?

For the cost of a few beers/bottle of wine, ask a mate who knows what they're doing to 're-install Windows' for you.

Combined a modern browser (Chrome is perfect), it will be perfectly functional as a PC.

I've done it for loads of people, who have similar age PCs still going strong.

I'm thinking that's a typo 😉

Perhaps 320MB?

@Cougar - I think's he's made a mistake.

Chrome and Firefox are much better than IE anyway

Best way to keep the machine running sweatly is to remove un-wanted programmes, make sure you do the disk clean up etc. @xiphon's idea is a good one, windows machines need TLC.

I found Windows 7 work really quite well on older machines, was running a P4 up until this weekend, with 1Gb of ram.. now moved up to a highly exciting 5 year old Athlon64 with 2gb's!
I only 'upgrade' as I was given it, all my money goes on bikes!

Never gunna set the world alight for high end apps or gaming but for running Itunes, doing the occasional browing it's just the job.

Off-hand download Ccleaner and clear off the temporary crap that built up in the background to start with. If your drives full of photo/vids, think about backing them up to media (DVD) & deleting there local copies off the PC (good practice anyway)

Provided you have enough RAM (ideally 2GB), Win7 is very good on older hardware.

Sorry for the typo - 32GB RAM.

I'm not good at all this registery stuff and not inclined to get into it TBH - and a bit scared of these freebie registery cleaners etc. We do get 2 errors on startup, no idea what they mean.

I've installed Chrome and all is fine.

Whats software is good for a general cleeanup / MOT for a novice user, or is it better to consider a windows 7 upgrade?

And won't a re-install re move all our pics etc (we do backup onto an external HDD (BAK files)).

Nope 32Gb of ram is not likely.. as XP 32 bit only support 4GB (display 3.5), hense why everyone question it..

Ccleaner is a two part tool, one is to clean the temporary files which on windows are like virus's & multiply, and secondly a reg cleaner. You run both parts of the tool independently.. I wasn't suggesting running the reg cleaner part, just the temp file cleaner.. so will do exactly what you want as a "general cleanup tool".

Without being rude, you want an upgrade version of Windows 7, this should go ontop of your XP without destroying your files but a general guide is to back them up elsewhere & disconnect that drive during the upgrade. Either was you gunna need more space to re-install/upgrade, hense deleting off large amount of photo/vid taking up space (I know you have a gopro - so no doubt your have GB's of vids)

Would the £25 'upgrade' offer for Windows 8 work?

Good. Your registry isn't dirty, leave it alone.

We do get 2 errors on startup, no idea what they mean.

What do they say?

Whats software is good for a general cleeanup / MOT for a novice user, or is it better to consider a windows 7 upgrade?

I can take a look remotely if you like?

Cheers Cougar I might take you up on that. I'm at work so can't remember / give you the error until tonight. The other is a "stuck" folder that opens on startup - can't seem to startup without it although it can be closed after startup.

What about Nobby's question - worth doing?

You'll need disk space to upgrade, first and foremost. Whether it'll make a difference, who knows. There's an upgrade advisor util you can run on MS's website that'll tell you if it'll work.

If you get the TeamViewer client and run it, it'll give you an ID and PIN. With those details, I can connect to your PC.

Email in profile, and I'm on just about every messenger going if that's easier to talk to me to coordinate things.
