To bring water to the front of the house I want another water butt, but it will have to go in the garage. Never mind, narrow and even wall mounted butts exist, it doesn't have to be very big, so all is well... until I saw the price, bugger that, £150 for a big crude moulding of cheap plastic?!
Has anyone ever made their own? I was wondering about making a giant camelbak-style bladder out of plastic sheeting and sticking it in a supporting frame against the wall. Could it work? Am I just going to flood the garage or drown everybody?
I can't believe water butts can so expensive; the one we have in the back was £15. For £100+ I can't believe they could ever pay off financially, and I'm not that much of an eco warrior...
Buy an old kayak, bolt it to the wall, pipe in the ends...

If you're going to DIY make it low and long ala kayak. If you make it tall the pressure at the bottom will be significant.

The one in the back garden is like that, but I want it narrower! It only needs to be fairly small for the occasional post ride bike rinse. Surely though significant pressure at the bottom is what makes a decent flow out of it, so is kinda essential?

What about a length of 160mm drainage pipe with a blanking plate?
Drain pipe, 90deg bends, could be as long as you like (within reason/size of wall) in an 's' configuration.
Sounds like a winner, would be easy enough to support with clips on a sheet of ply or sterling board.
Oooo I hadn't thought of using big pipe! Two 1.5m lengths of 160mm pipe is 60 litres, which is plenty, plus they're nice and solid for fittings (the bit I wasn't sure about with plastic sheet).
Slightly pricier but less likely to end up like this
