I'm a little confused about fitting a gas hob in a new kitchen, not spoken to the kitchen people, thought I'd ask STW first.

I want this hob, which is 918mm wide, however the hob unit (with drawers under the hob) in the proposed kitchen is only 800mm, with a 600mm base cupboard either side.

Do I need to find a 1000mm hob unit or can the hob be wider? I assume I'd have to modify the cupboards either side, maybe boxing in a section at the top to accommodate the hob overhang?

I've found a similar hob thats narrower but to get the 6Kw wok burner you need to have the extra wide job, I assume because of the extra heat?

So can I just take the extra 25mm (either side) off the top of the adjacent cupboard?

You'll have the units under the bench to cut too, it looks like the depth is 45mm, more importantly is the gas connection position, as you don't want to end up wit that in an awkward position.

So its OK to cut a normal cupboard then? doesn't have to be a hob specific unit?

The gas connection position might be an issue looking at that picture, looks like it'll be right on the edge of the units.

I would get the correct sized unit, it'll look nicer too with the draws/doors being symmetrical with the hob. We put a kind of bowed out drawer unit under ours, with a bowed work top, and it looks really good.

Its an ikea kitchen we're looking at, they only go up to 800mm units for some reason.
(yes, Neff hob in an Ikea kitchen!)

There is a narrower hob that'll fit but the wok burner is only 4Kw.

Or could go for a standard 4 burner hob with the wok burner on a domino over the adjacent cupboard...

What about making a 1000mm unit out of two 500s? Then you'd only be cutting into the central 'sides'. Or are you putting a builtin oven underneath?

I'd have gone with a 1000 unit with two 500[1]s either side, myself, but as you say, Ikea don't do them.

[1] I was quite sad when planning my kitchen and every cupboard is a multiple of 500mm wide. Symmetry-tastic.

Two 500s isn't a bad idea, except like you said, Ikea dont do them.
I'll see if I can fit two 600s in and drop the ones either side down a bit.

Good idea, thanks!

Ooooh, two 600s seems to be a winner at the moment.

You'd need to see if the connection can be accommodated by the unit on the right I.e. does it have a drawer etc., can it be connected with that unit already fitted etc.

45mm is less than some but not all worktops I think?

I'm assuming the 600s will be used as either full cupboards, or have a fake top 'drawer'. Or could do a 'high-line' style with a cupboard door made up of a cupboard and drawer front if the units either side have top drawers.

Remember youll need a gas safe fitter to install and connect the gas hob and cooker.

Yes it's normal. I have an 800 set of drawers under a 900 hob.
You might have to cut the gable tops of the units for it to fit. (That's normal too)
I wouldn't worry about the gas connection. It will fit somehow.
