We're off to the US this summer and I came up with the idea of hiring an RV (2 adults + 2 kids) for obvious reasons.

Just looking at the hire sites I've realised that the US motorhome as somewhat huge.

My license is post 97 so I don't have entitlement to class C1. I see on the hire sites that it generally says only a standard driving license is required.

Anyone have any input here. I'd guess that the RVs are all > 3500kg am so I'd probably be stuffed should an accident occur without a C1 license. C1 license traning looks like it would add something like £600 to the price of the holiday, not sure it's worth it...

Don't the US let any old person drive the massive RVs with just a standard licence?

And by old, I mean 80+ year old with failing vision!!

I remember Mark Beaumont saying that was one of the scariest things about cycling in the US.

I assume that refers to US license though which I'm guessing differ for UK/Euro ones.

My US driving test consisted of checking I could drive forward, reverse and stop. A rental business that only requires a standard US licence will accept a UK licence

Your entitlement is part of UK law.

You'd be driving in the US, so UK rules don't apply. It's up to the US who they let drive what. And they let anyone drive RVs afaik even though some are the size of HGVs.

The rental company will know more than us 🙂

Canadian here. I showed up in Portland, Ore., with a car-only licence and left the lot with 14,500 pounds worth of RV. Drove all over Washington, California and Oregon. Had blast.Remember, roads in the US are bigger than what you're used to, so driving these massive beasts aren't quite as hard as if you were to head through downtown London.

I looked at hiring one but wow they are expensive and when you consider the price of fuel on top you can stay in some really nice hotels for the same price, probably much cheaper.
You can't just go to a national park and park up anywhere either. Mostly RV parks which aren't always in the best places.
I rented a really plush car and stayed in some properly nice motels and b and bs for much cheaper.
