What is a lightweight, strong material with good sonic transmission capabilities? One that lets sound through easily

In other words - what would you use to waterproof a really small microphone?

It needs to be tougher than that. Imagine maybe like a mobile phone case - but that lets sound through really easily. What are phone cases made out of?

Can anyone makes sense of this?

Do I want a lower acoustic impedance to let more sound through?

Hmm, gortex... *googles*
