So we have a nice new car... Bluetooth connections and all that jazz, but today we discovered that her android phone when connected not only displays texts on the car screen, but also has a function to read them out too. Very good, but this doesn't happen from my iPhone se and I can't make it do it - now I suffer the 'my phones better than yours' jibes! This is very upsetting from someone who can hardly use a smart phone! Help me make my phone do that stuff too???

I had it the other way, my android would only play the music currently selected via bluetooth and nothing else but my Iphone 4 does everything.

You've discovered the problem with ios. It's the Fisher price of phones. All big mashy buttons making it easy to use but if you want to do something behind the basics you can't.

But they aren't better...they are equally good/bad as each other. The only real 'weakness' is that you have to pay a shed load of money for the Apple product whereas you pay less for an Android thing.

have a look here

http://www.ford.co.uk/OwnerServices/SYNC-and-Bluetooth-Support/SYNC-App-Link-Catalogue#/

we use a lot of Fords at work and most people use iphones as they understand that most android devices are more of a disposable item with a life expectancy of a gold fish

Not possible I'm afraid they're both awful in their own special way.

I used to get hacked off with my android phone on occasion, so I bought an iPhone, now that narks me in equal but opposite ways. Basically, until google buy apple, or vice versa were all shafted, but then well be totally shafted.

My wife bought an android, she was seduced by the cheap prices.

Christ, its clunky. She hates it after 2 months because everything is just so 'unslick' (I know that's not a word, but struggling to find a way to explain how amateurish the thing is)

So, OP...just tell her her phone is shit because it's an android. It'll die soon.

I have an android phone and an iPad. Purely by virtue of having a built in back button I would say that android is better. 🙂

Victoria Beckham has one. A Gold £20 000 one, it must be better at that price.

They're cool. Which is a good enough reason for buying one if you're in your twenties.

Once you're into your thirties though, you'd hope people would be grown up enough to realise that a cheaper, more refined Android device is what they should be buying. An iPhone doesn't look so cool in the hands of a balding, middle aged bloke who can't fit into his skinny jeans any more.....

No reason not to look cool in middle age. My white iphone sets off the white belt and slip ons a treat.

I bought an android after 5 years with an iPhone. I've had it 8months.

It does the job but the iPhone was still better , just more intuitive. I don't want to tinker with settings I just want it to work and the androids just a pain in arse except for the price which was what drove me to the android. I wasnt paying 700 quid

"I look sexy as hell with my iPhone. "
why does it cover up some of your face?
well, come on someone had to say it.

I've current got a fancy Samsung, a windows and a IPhone 4 (moving to 6 shortly, because a, i'm a drug dealer or b, i'm working on a lame project for work.
if I had to pick one it would be a toss up between the Samsung and the low rent windows phones.
Just don't like the iPhone, doesn't make it good or bad. but the absence of a back button is silly.

My Samsung was quite good at phoning and texting people. So is my iphone. Dropped my samsung and got a minute hairline crack i couldn't even see and it stopped working. Did the same again with a newly installed £70 screen a month later and it stopped working again. If it wasn't for this i think i'd prefer the samsung, but being a clumsy bastard it's the dark side for me from now on.

Wow, awesome bickering guys!! Feel proud to set that off, but only one potential answer to my question!! I love my iPhone, it is better, but the simple Idea of displaying a text on the car screen is vexing me!

I've got an up to date iPhone for work and a newish android as my own phone.

They're both pretty good. Android seems to have more features and I like that you don't need to sign up for all the pish that apple make you sign up for. The iPhone is a bit nicer. That said, with my own cash I'd not pay for an iPhone.

Am i alone in thinking that cars shouldn't display things like text messages etc?
One being advertised on tv recently spoke about the facebook app in the car (possibly a peugeot)
I just think, NO, its better to just pay attention to the road/your driving and worry about facebook etc when you're NOT driving.
As regards OP, i used to have all android, I switched a couple of years ago to all ios, i just prefer it, but I'd struggle to say one was better than the other.
Although, the lack of a 'back' button is plain daft.

I'm thinking of getting an iphone SE. What is a good similarly sized android equivalent? I find the 5" and bigger screens are too much of a handful.

My iPhone shows the texts on my Ford Focus. Yours should do, you maybe need to change a setting or something.

Just say out loud (without pressing a single button on your phone) 'hey siri, read my texts' at which point the clever devil will read aloud your messages......

I'm also a bit concerned the driver about to pass me is reading a text off the dashboard.

My phone goes in the glove box which locks with the ignition key. AFAIK this approach works with both ios and Android.

I wouldn't even contemplate a phone where i couldn't change the battery in seconds.
The first thing apple people do when they enter a room is look where the plugs are so they can charge their phones.
There they sit, scrunched up against the wall deciding if they prefer drinking their coffee or looking at their phone.
Meanwhile I sit there with an ability that must surely have been beamed from the future, drinking and single tracking all at the same time.

There will be a way to do it. Most manufacturers seem to gear up the car integration for the iPhone over Android. Are you running the latest ios ?. That said Android is better 🙂

My answer would be why would you want your texts displayed on the car screen "Hi Mate fancy a cheeky pint Tbursday after work ?"

Also is it actually a good idea to have such distractions in the car, is it safe to read a long text or reply whilst driving ?

You clearly work for the Daily Mail. 🙄
Who gives a shit about 'cool', it's a sodding smartphone. Bloke I work with has a Sony with Android, it's been causing him so many problems over the last couple of weeks, battery drops dramatically and it gets hot, he took it back, had the OS updated, battery still drops dramatically 20-30% over a couple of hours.

I wouldn't even contemplate a phone where i couldn't change the battery in seconds.
The first thing apple people do when they enter a room is look where the plugs are so they can charge their phones.

Well, you're going to be shit out of luck before long, because fewer and fewer smartphones will be available with swappable batteries, in the same way that headphone sockets will disappear.
I can't say I've ever noticed anyone desperately searching for somewhere to charge their phones, but then, I don't hang out in places that have USB ports built into the walls so that the terminally tragic can spend the entire evening communing with the sodding internet instead of each other.
People don't actually carry a wallwart around with them, do they?
I actually carry a large powerpack, but that's just in case I find myself driving a car with no USB and a duff 12v aux or 12v adaptor, which has happened a couple of times, because using satnav for two to three hours really does eat the battery.

I've already given my sensible answer (they aren't any better or worse), so I'll go for the humour now -

There will be a way to do it.

Yes, get rid of the Whyphone and get an Android device!

It can read them on a voice command, you can't return one.

My 3 month old iPhone SE has to 'Reload' every 'web page due to a problem' all of a sudden.

My ageing iPad does this. My work android phone which is bottom of the ring stuff, doesn't.

I'm starting to get very fed up with Apple products.

One of the Skodas I test drove earlier this year could. Visual display of your texts and the option to reply using the touch screen.

Sounds dangerous.
As a result phones and charging nexus here that lasts all day with good use. Only time I have trouble is when I'm on the phone, music and GPS all day which is fair enough. But then it charges fully in under an hour.

Why not just pull over and reply safely? I will warn you that some folks might get a bit stroppy if they think you're deliberately trying to prevent them from getting a free parking space in a residential street while they go shopping.
Perhaps the reply on the move Skoda is a better option.

Until a month ago I'd had android for about 4.5 years. Swapped to an iPhone 6s as an early upgrade as my Samsung A3 was driving me up the wall. Prior to that I'd had a Samsung galaxy s2 for years. The s2 was good until it stared flowing down big time in the 3rd year of having it. The A3 was ok ish for a year, but after that it started getting glitches and the battery just wasn't lasting. I went for the A3 as it was fairly small compared to the s5 or whatever the top phone was at the time. I was planning to get the new A3 2016 or an iPhone se for the size. However the se was too small screen wise.

So far I think the iPhone is better than the android phones I've had - although it still has annoying things about it. Mainly where Apple force you to do things you wouldn't ideally do / the phone doing things without you asking it to.

The biggest thing android has going for itself is also its biggest downfall, the fact its multi manufacture means you can get some cracking phones from some manufactures and some truly shocking ones from others.

But generally instead of blaming the manufacture when an android device is poor its just another crap android device.

apple for years have felt better in the hand than andriod devices that have alwasy felt a little less ''quality''.

But for me samsung have nailed the S7 it feels like a quality product, good battery life the latest android os feels really good and the camera knocks spots off the newest apple.

unfortunately as i said there are still crap android phones being released which brings the name down.

I wish it was easier to connect my galaxy to my laptop and transfer music over without having to take the chip out.
Have tried loads of different ways .
There was one way Thats just like iTunes but it cost 30 dollars. I don't like the google play app as it can't download a lot of my files and I don't want pictures of who is singing the song just a big list of the artists.
Having said that apple have buggered up iTunes on the iPhones. The 4 we use at the shop has a much simpler way of doing stuff. The 4s at home is unusable in comparison.

I've been an Android user and fan since the early days of it and have had various HTC's and Samsung's, I didn't really get the fuss of iPhones and just thought they were expensive fashion symbols.

However, my last phone, a HTC M9 was that dire (Not Androids fault) that I paid the contract off early and a couple of weeks ago I took delivery of a iPhone 7+

So why didn't I choose another Android phone? Well apart from calls/texts/browsing I wanted a phone with a decent camera. The phones I've had previously have been extremely varied with camera quality, again not Androids fault. All the pictures I see taken with an iPhone have constantly been good.

So, two weeks in and I have no complaints with the iPhone. The OS is no better or no worse than Android

Edit.

Yes one thing that does annoy me with it, I can't charge it whilst listening to music through the earphones (unless I buy a splitter dongle thingy or those ridiculous wireless things)

Being the owner of an iPhone and an Android phone I believe I'm brilliantly placed to help you.

My conclusion is that Andriod phones are awesome. iPhones are hateful pieces of crap.

Whilst being a very concise summary of my feelings towards my portable telephones, its entirely justified. I'm not sure how a small item of electronic wizzardry can annoy me as much as my iPhone does. Its a work one so I don't even pay for it but I cannot think of a single positive thing it offers over Android.

HTH

We have both in OAB household.

Our Motorola phones have been ace. Reliable, fast, great value.
Mrs_oab had a Galaxy ace that she never really got with, it just felt too 'Samsung' over android. Oldest_oab has a cheaper Sony that now refuses any other app as the Sonyfication of Android uses so much space... Awful.
Mrs_oab now has 5s, and while slick and nice, has some real frustrations. One a week it refuses to send texts, until you restart. It sometimes freezes when trying to answer calls. Not great.

So none are better IMO. I think manufacturer overlay, android version and build quality is more important - and Apples fixation on locking me into products is frustrating.
