will be moving back into our house in a couple of weeks after a few years of renting it out.
just rang virgin, and as i feared, left more confused than when i started, after a 100mph detailing of prices, options, first 6 months at x then cancel your phone when the price goes up and its a bit cheaper again etc etc.

so.... went onto their website (mebbes should have done that first) and i looked at this page for prices.

i dont want any phone or tv package. there will be 4 adults living there, me and the missus (stream the odd film, netflix, laptop each) and 2 adult lads (both got xboxes).
we'll be paying it, so not toooo fussed if they get the odd lag on their gaming 👿 but ideally itll be fast enough for us all.

was hoping for something less than £30 i must say, but am i right in thinking all options will pretty much cost that, its just the dedicated internet that wouldnt go up after 6 months? would the cheapest 50Mbps be adequate for what ive described?

by the way, any other options gratefully recieved. heard the horror stories about talktalk, but there again theyve all got horror stories i spose. virgin was good for us when we lived there before, but im open to suggestions.

thanks

No need for a phone with us or anyone else

Eh, how can they say that? If you want fibre [or standard broadband] you HAVE to have a phone line. Or are they talking about cable? In which case they should call it cable and not fibre or broadband.

Anyway - we're with Zen and have found them to be great (i.e. I've never had to call them with an issue).

You need to confirm if the street is cabled by VIrgin or if you would be receiving their ADSL style solution over your phone line.

If the former then no need for a phone line and 50 Mb should be fine.

If the latter then you need to keep the phone line but figure out how fast the connection would really be and how far from the exchange you are.

If you use the Zen line checker it will tell you what you can really expect and takes into account your distance from the cabinet (says we can expect 11.5mbps due to being a mile from the cabinet - we actually get 10.5 so it's pretty accurate).
Amazingly I find 10.5 is fine and that taking into account there are 3 teenage girls in the family who just stream stuff all the time 😐

personally i dont know the difference, not techy enough. which is better, cable bb or fibre bb? isnt it just the speed i need to look at?

pretty sure its cabled by them but ill check

Unless you go with Virgin then anything you get will be coming over copper lines to your house.
I switched up after going out of contract with EE.
Have 45-50mb consistently with phone line for £22 a month.
New customers can get it better than that!
They throw in EE TV and recorder
I know you said you weren't interested but at that price it's all your streaming and recording too with catchup.

Zen do seem to be about double the price of the alternatives.

No thanks.

there was an offer on Virgin in MoneySavingExpert's email last week - Phone line + 50mb broadband for £22.99 a month all in on a 12 month contract.

Not sure you'll get much cheaper than that even on the likes of TalkTalk.

Virgin seem to be updating the 50mb to 70mb - just done me and the online tests showed I have that speed.

Yes - EE do home broadband, digital TV and mobile.
FWIW - I don't have a phone attached - just the line.
Existing EE customers get further discounts similar to new ones - only returning ones don't get the real low ones.
