Hi all I'm looking for a nice campsite anywhere in the Pyrenees to spend the last week of my holiday.

Preferably have the following

High up in the mountains, cool with plenty of shade

Plenty of space and not crammed in

As natural as possible

A good place to mountain bike and walk.

Currently stuck on a campsite near gavarnie with none of the above

I was going to suggest this place.

But just took a look at the map and it's a long drive, although not far as the crow flies!

Hi

If you dont want to travel to far Camping du lac in arcizans is quiet.   There are few up the road to Estrang which look even quieter.

There loads of walking and ive seen mountain biking trails around argles but i road bike so i cant comment on the quality.

We often stay at Pradelongue in Luchon its not on the mountains but again its quiet.   There is a lot of mountain biking in the area.  You can get the lift up Superbanges and there traiks back of varying difficulty.   There also looks to be loads of Mountain  biking in the Val de Aran just over the border in Spain but there no lifts.   There looks like theres lots of camping in the vallley between Bossot ans Viella.

We've spent the past 6 years in yhe Pyranees doing the Alps this year feeling a jealous.

Nick

One we've stayed in a few times is Arome Vanille in Luchon. In the mountains, great lift assisted riding, plenty of other riding, walking, rafting. There are two fields, one is the classic, regimented areas and is usually pretty full. The other is a natural field full of trees for shade, usually empty (except for us). Luchon is a lovely spa town and the site is about 1 mile away

@jonnyyeti - how can a site in Gavarnie not be good for walking? Surely the cirque is on your doorstep along with Breche de Roland etc etc

I'm curious as we're heading down there next month.

@ElShalimo area is fine for walking to be fair just don't like being crammed in with no privacy. If your planning on stopping at the campsite at the top of the valley book it first as it was full when we tried to get in.

Hi try campsite at Col de Portet d'Aspet - Camping Les Asphodèles -we've camped there a few times, never been packed, away from the crowds, laid back, fantastic wooded valleys. Then on the drive back to UK you could break your journey  at our place www.bellessise.fr

Camping Ascou la Forge. Big open flat field with a very modern toilet block. You can walk offroad into the nearest town of Ax les Thermes.and a circular route over into the spectacular Vallee D'Orlu.

If its the same Dutch owners then they organised and ran various outdoor activities  and had a big room full of maps and guides. I went canyoning with the owner and it was great.

Not crammed in, but then not 'loads' of space (I like campsites with humongous space)
