Not sure why this one just wanted to bask in the hot sun. It had a bloated tick which I removed and lapped up some water (no, not milk).

Best left alone?

Hedgehogs piss me off. Why can't they just share the hedge?

Hedgehogs seen out during the day is usually because they are hungry, thirsty or ill.
Any help/advice you need can be found at www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk or the British hedgehog preservation society on 01584 890801.

There's a whole society devoted to preserving hedgehogs? Would a big jar of pickling vinegar not do?

Hedgehog + daylight may equal hungry and/or thirsty, but IME Hedgehog +midday sun = ill. Your local RSPCA will take it.

Aw, it doesn't look very well, it's got a kind of far away look in its eyes...

how on earth do you remove a tick from a hedgehog?!

We've looked after 3 abandoned baby hoglets this winter. They were taken to our local vet after the parents were found dead. Been great seeing them grow, and how different their personalities were. Quite a sad moment when they were each released into their new gardens. Hopefully in return they'll eat all the slugs that massacre anything we plant in the garden!

Any hog found out during the day is in a bad way, contact your local rescue centre.

We found one tangled in a football net in our back garden last year, took it to a rescue centre and was told the outlook was bleak due to its ticks and general poor health. Anyway, we gave it a name and several months later we released it and another rescued hog back into the garden.

One of them nested in the house that we built from an old pallet and we are hopeful of getting another one nesting this year.

The thing I found most shocking was the decling rate of hedgehog numbers, I seem to recall that they are likely to be extinct by 2020 based on current figures (figures from memory so could be wrong) I found it quite shocking as extinction is something that happens to exotict animals in far away places, not in my back garden.

Give Walkers a bell, they use Hedgehogs as flavoring 😀

***UPDATE****

It crept away although a bit unsteady on its back legs.

Now we'll never know, maybe its best that way.....

(I removed the tick with electricians pliers! It didn't curl up into a ball as you would expect and was quite content to let me remove the critter)

Good link from flapjack, http://www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk/FAQS/faq.htm check out the FAQs, it may help to leave some cat food out in evening (even left overs) as 'hog maybe just need some extra food, worth a try. Keep an eye out at dusk.
