Flying to America end of the month, my flight from Edinburgh lands in terminal 1 and my conecting flight leaves from terminal 5 1 hr 55 minutes later.

Having never been to Heathrow and never had a connecting flight will that be enough time ? Do you have to check in and all that guff again ?

If you land on time and get a move on you should be fine, train takes you between terminals

Are they both the same airline - if so, you'll be fine as they will ensure you catch it.

Otherwise, why didn't you book an earlier flight from Edinburgh?

If you can check your bags in at the start of the journey no problems as long as your first flight is on time.

90 mins is ok, thats checking bags in but you will just have to go through immigration and security as they will check you in as you make the first flight, they will have had folk making the same connection as you before , i would inform the cabin crew on your first flight you have a connection and they will sometimes move you nearer the front of the cabin for a quick exit, you can also choose seats online nearer the front of the plane as well.

You should be able to through check-in (and your bags) from EDI to the US. The BA flight to T1 must be an old BMI route/flight. You should be fine, and if not, do not worry too much BA will sort you out without any fuss.

You still have to go through immigration and customs which can be a pain at T5 so be prepared to inform one of the upgraded shelf stackers, sorry security staff you have a connecting flight and they should put you in the fast track lane.

Yes they check your passport / boarding pass and then you go through the search process again, laptops out, jackets off, belts off, no fluids over 100 ml etc etc your obviously in for a treat, dont get stroppy with them as they will take great joy in messing you about further.

Be absolutely fine with hand luggage. Check in online, print boarding pass off, catch Heathrow Express to T5, stagger through security.

Im under the impression if im catching a connecting flight i have to go to a certain area and await a specific bus (unless this is the heathrow express)

As said I'd expect BA to 'bus' you across between flights - otherwise odds on are that you won't make it. Just make yourself known to the Stewardess on your Edinburgh-LHR flight.

You will be on one of the old BMI flights. 90 mins is tons of time, and as you are connecting on the same carrier they will sort you out if the Edinburgh flight is late.

It's dead simple. At T1 just follow signs to Flight Connections which will take you to where the airside buses leave for all terminals. Make sure you check in online and have both boarding passes with you to get you through the flight connections check.

They will help sort you out if the flight is late. T5 security can be a pain so if you are late ask one them to help you through.

Again, make sure you have your boarding pass for the onward flight, and get a seat near the front of the flight from Edinburgh to reduce the offload time.

You'll arrive at T1 and come it of domestic arrivals, follow the signs for Flight Connections where you'll go to the coaching gates and a bus will take you over to T5. The busses run every 5-10 minutes and the journey only takes about 10 minutes at most.

In a word yes.
It happens quite often that people miss connecting flights. When this happens they will rebook you onto a later flight FOC.

^this.
Purple signs. If time is tight, BA may have staff as you get off the bus holding a sign with you're onward flight no. on. They can speed you through.
