I reckon 7 pages ending on what would have happened if Stalin invaded Libya. 😀
Indeed.
I've got mine on over here in the Ewe Ess of Ay. Plenty of people asking me what it is. When I explain, and explain the work of the Legion that is funded by it, they are all very impressed.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
Eh? Is this sarcasm?
Remembrance Day isn't till next week surely 11/11/11.
Picked mine up today.
Went for a wander through the local park today - first time since starting my new job. Saw a plaque and went over to read it. Choked up.

I'm working in a Civil Service office employing 1000+ people; reckon I've seen 6 or 7 people wearing them all week. Considering the front desk has a donation pot and a box of poppies it's bloody sickening.
seems to be compulsory to be wearing one if you're on tv.
not saying that's a bad thing, just an observation.
i like what the legion have done to diversify the poppy appeal over the past few years. the paper poppy isn't the most practicle thing in the world so stuff like the wrist bands or the mobile phone screen savers and stuff are an excellent idea.
You can donate money without sticking something on you to show everyone that you've done so.

Poppy fascism is depressing. The wearing of one does mean something to a lot of people, I do think it demeans that statement a little when they hand them out to visiting Hollywood types in the BBC green room.
Because of that Jon Snow refuses to wear one until the day itself. I quite approve.

You're missing the point, I guess you have never served. It's not hard to have a little empathy even if your own life is a little lacking.

I can and do. However I like wearing something which will hopefully make other people stop and think.
If you want to get yourself worked up on a Friday, read the "poppy" thread on the TalkCeltic forum. Boils my blood. It's the only time when I feel the urge to knock out the first person I see wearing a Celtic top in Glasgow.
OOI - why is it we "will' not we "shall" remember them? I have wondered this ever since school. Is it just for emphasis?
I like the idea of the poppy wrist bands - encouraged my kids to contribute and to remember. Good thinking!
A fantastic appeal for a very worthy cause, but I have held off buying one and will get one on monday.
Lots of squadies in the city yesterday, I felt a little guilty walking past but its over a week away... but then again, I guess I'm being a bit of a prat really.

Your statement is factually correct. But you've totally missed the point of wearing a poppy. Some people may do as you say - but I hope (and genuinely believe) they're in the minority.

True, but it might prompt others to donate, or just take a moment to remember.
I wear it as a sign of respect as well.
I've always felt it would be better and have more impact if they were worn just on the 11th.
Do "they" still do white ones ?
I seem to remember some proper argy-bargy over them a while ago
I'm with Gary_M - don't see the need to wear one.

So do I. It's Remembrance Day, not Remembrance Fortnight.
I think it loses its impact if it gets spread over a longer period.

Fair enough, but it isn't about the money. It's a visible message of solidarity with the troops and veterans. Like I say, fair enough if that isn't something you want to associate yourself with, it's a free country.

No I haven't, but I would imagine most people that stick money in a tin and show off their poppy have.
A lot of lamposts in wrexham have large poppies tied to them, at least it kept someone in A job,

i am proud to wear one on the day.
I guess you have never served
What does that mean? 😕
I have no problem with them and always pop a quid or two in the boxes this time of year, but I don't feel people should be made or feel compelled to wear one. I invariably lose any I ever get within a few minutes anyway so there's little point in me putting one on, but the important thing is to remember. Because that's what it's all about.
Oh, and the war memorial outside the front of my building always has poppy wreaths placed at it's foot on Remembrance Sunday.
It's about the only thing the local scrotes actually respect.
I can see this thread getting pulled before the night is out.
For me I can safely say that Remembrance Sunday was the one day of the year I did not mind being forced to go to church ,dressed smartly and sober. Often shed a tear whilst the Bugler played.
So i hope you will excuse me if this thread degenerates later on and I am on the wrong side of a bottle of wine.
Just like Christmas then?
Pretty much yeah. Very few people remember the "true meaning of Christmas" (be that Christian, or simply family) because it's been diluted into a two month long retail bonanza.
I was walking home over Hungerford bridge and a German (or Austrian maybe) lady asked me why I was and other people were wearing them......
Didn't know how best to explain it, stoopid really, cue mumbling and poppy fields and 1st world war and current conflicts and shuffle away...
As long as they get the money I don't care who does what or where they do it. Surely there can't be a stw barney on this one.
No shame in explaining it to German Tiger6791.
These days it is considered a day to remember ALL the fallen. In all conflicts. Regardless of "side".
Yeah I know that but put on spot and brain melted
