Have we had a Dune thread yet?

Went yesterday and though it was visually and audibly spectacular, we were not bored even almost 3hrs in, but we came away feeling disappointed (unlike the first film). I'm a big fan of the book*, so my disappoint with the 'changes' is one thing, but my partner who has no skin in the game, also felt let down/disappointed/deflated by it.

* (@skud) only this book, I tried and read some of them, but did not enjoy them, even though I really wanted to like them.

I was disappointed they opted against showing Paul training the Fremen in the ‘weirding way’ – to me that was a pretty integral part of them defeating the Harkonnens.

List any/all of the stuff that Villeneuve chose to leave out from CHOAM, to the navigators, to the weirding way, to Mentats...At some point I think any translation from a book to a film is going to loose some stuff on the way, doubly so for works like Dune that literally go all over the place anyway. If you're looking for that I think you'd be disappointed, if your looking for an interpretation on the central theme, I thinks its a creditable stab that gets it mostly right.

This is exactly our experience. Not bored, but disappointed. Mrs Onewheel hasn't read the book either, and it was actually she who suggested we go to see it yesterday, but this morning she said 'If they make another one I don't think I'll bother seeing it'.

Went to see it last night, first time i've been to IMAX screening in years, blimey, made the sub-woofer in my lounge sound a bit paltry!

I think visually it is real spectacle, between this and Shogun on TV currently, there are some film-makers making visually stunning work.

I really liked it, apart from Christopher Walken's character came across as a little lame, enough power to order the destruction of whole blood lines, then a slightly lame ending for him.

But all in all, i thought it was great and look forward to part 3.

Finally got to the cinema today

brilliant way to spend Easter Sunday

wowzers, loved it so much, watched the 1st one again last night to get ready

loved that they seem to have used the Gieger designs for the spice harvesters

agree that Walken seemed a bit wooden

Part 1 was Epic, it set the scene wonderfully and  gave it the grandeur that was missing from the previous attempts.  Part 2 seemed to lack both depth and grandeur.  In the book, this is where most of the detail for what is to come is laid, but it’s missing here.

That being said,  I thought the way they used SOUND in the second film was immense!  It was almost uncomfortable at times which really added to the experience, but will likely be lost on home cinema experiences.  Timothee Chalamet was again excellent.  The best Paul Atreides we’ve seen so far - a great blend of warrior, prophet, son and duke.

Agree with Daffy, Part 2 was a bit of a mess - really looked like they had to do some savage editing in the second half and it stopped making sense. The sound though, that was awesome. My seat in the Vue was shaking.

I couldn't help thinking, with the Worm riding... how did they stop and get off? How did they make them go where they wanted them to? They were made far too big to be able to even notice a human was riding on them. All rather silly that.

According tot he books, they run the worm to exhaustion on the surface and then dismount and the worm is too tired to attack and other worms stay away, allowing them to get off and run away.  Similarly in the books, the grapples which expose the tender flesh of the worm beneath the armor  can be used to steer it, the worm essentially tries to keep those exposed bits at the top, so they can make it turn by opening the most left or right grapple further, then even out the grapples or release entirely.

It showed you. They pull on the ‘scales’ to get them to rise, turn or slow.

I thought it was even better than the first even helped the first make a little more sense. Agreed the sound was immense glad I seen it in iMax.

According to the books...

Not read them, and didn't get that from the film, maybe I drifted off during that explanation. I did have a few micronaps during part 2 😊

I had quite a good snooze in Part one so maybe I had better give part two a miss incase my snoring upsets other people.

The more i look back at it, the more holes i see, it was a bit of a mess, the ending just didn't make sense, they came in on the worms, took out all the sardaukans and harkonnens, but the ships were undamaged and somehow the Fremen were able to work out how to crew and operate them in an hour or so as the enemy had left the keys in them 🤣

Personally i just didn't feel like there was closure in it, all the talk for years was Part 2 was going to end it well, then it's all pretty much planned for 'Part 3, coming soon'.

Took me a second watch, with no-one to disturb me, and on the projector to get through Part 1 without missing bits.

The Fremen had been using them a very long time, they were featured using them in Part 1.

I'm on about the massive interplanetery ships they were taking off in at the end, the ones that were knocked over like pinballs by the worms during the fighting

Got to agree it felt a bit disjointed like it has been edited and missing some important details. The major battle and deposing of the emperor felt a bit rushed and lacked depth. Don't get me wrong it's in no way an Alien 3 style cut and shut travesty, more of an Event Horizon it could have been even better with the edited out/storyboarded scenes included. Or as the case may be, omissions from the original story!

I was glad that I read the book again before going to see the films.
I thought they did an excellent job on both, and enjoyed watching them with the story fresh in my head.
Not sticking exactly to the letter of the book didn't bother me in the least.
I do think they have a job on their hands for the next film though.
Getting across the details behind Alia,Gholas,Facedancers and the scheming Princess Irulan is going to be a tough gig.
😉😊

Oh the ship belonging to houses?

There’s this guy called Paul, he now controls the empire. It wasn’t just Fremen in the ships.

I just watched pt2 in IMAX. I was impressed. Some bits felt a bit rushed and stuff was
Missed out but on the whole it was really engaging - I think is complements the book quite well.

It was stupidly, I would say irresponsibly loud though. Not the body shaking bass, but the high mid and treble. That seems to be the cinema not the film though as the ads were as bad. By the end of the trailers it was really quite unpleasant as trailers tend to go for maximum effect…. I’m wondering is those sound levels are even legal and there’s no way I’m taking my 11 hr olds to see IMAX films in the near future

Well I enjoyed pt 2 much more than pt 1 (saw it on Saturday night). But it's still far, far away from my favourite film ever.

*did anyone else start thinking about “The Life of Brian” during some of the messiah scenes?*
Not that, but when Christopher Walken started his speech at the end, I was half expecting him to mention the watch hidden up his ass.

I turned to my mate at one point and said "He's not the messiah, he's a very naughty boy"

We had the same experience  in an odeon. A couple of points should have crescendoed nicely but its like the missed the cue and it all got a bit mushy.

I enjoyed the shaking bass. So much, in fact, that I've just bought a sub to add to my Sonos Beam at home as I'd forgotten how much extra it adds to film-watching experience 🙂

I think that is something of a calling card for Villeneuve, he mixes the background noise up and the dialogue down. I think it is to create a false sense of intensity, as it means you have to really focus on the dialogue to follow it, unfortunately not because of complexity or actually good dialogue but just because the sound is messed up.

I refused to watch Part 1 unless I knew there was a Part 2 in the way and I've finally seen them both hooray! I even held of re-reading the book as I get distracted from film/s when they deviate from the source. As its been 20 since reading Dune I get to go "huh, I don't remember that" instead.

So anyway.

Are there likely to be more films? Is this just supposition or rumour?

Are there likely to be more films?

Quote from DigitalSpy.com

Dune 3 is happening after Dune: Part Two became the highest-grossing movie of the year to date with nearly $700 million worldwide. The third movie was officially confirmed in on April 4, 2024 and, of course, Denis Villeneuve will return to wrap up his Dune trilogy by adapting Frank Herbert's book sequel Dune Messiah.

Yeah part 3 is happening but if you can't wait then the 2003 Children of Dune miniseries is an adaptation of the 2nd and 3rd Dune books.
