Mine is slow to use, and it can take a long time for speakers to show up...but it does eventually work. S2 App/ Connect, a 3 and some 1s. I think I have them all on the main network with one hard wired in. None on the mesh/other network because that caused problems.

Lutron? Thought that was blinds n'stuff.

I wonder if I could get the ikea remote working with home assistant to control my sonos, i don't fancy adding another manufacturer specific hub just for that, but controlling the volume through spotify is a really poor experiance.

I use the Lutron remotes and they work in 1% and they work the same way, but can't say for sure

Cheers. Shame the audio one is so expensive compared to the light controls!

I built one of these https://github.com/petrepa/ESPHome-Desk-Controller

Works perfectly, but while not too hard to make, definitely not for the novice.

How deep is the hatred of Sonos running at the moment? Fighting the temptation to buy an ERA 100, but do wonder if a Homepod 2, or even Echo Studio, would be a better option

Dunno, but it's running just fine for me in 2 houses.  It was a bit flaky some months ago but it seems to be doing what it's supposed to now.

Edit: I'd buy more if I had the money.

After a year or so of refusing to update to the latest Sonos app I just bought a secondhand Connect to replace my old expired one, and in setting it up realised it's a Gen 2, so need the new/ latest app in order to do anything (even downgrade it to S1).

So I did that, and updated my whole setup to the latest app and... it's not terrible. I got my music library set up, and my online music services (Sounds, Spotify etc). It's pretty responsive, recognises most of my system most of the time. The only thing it's doing right now is forgetting all my online music services, but resetting the app (while tiresome) fixes that, and the desktop controller doesn't have that problem.

Given the sound and the hardware quality, it's a qualified "goferit" from me

I'm finding the app fine, except it doesn't have an option to open the artist or album that a single song is for, which irritates me. Tend to airplay when I can find the iPad for better app.

We gave up after the old play 1s became bricks. Our play5 just plays as a speaker from a connected Alexa.

the play 1 might as well be a doorstop.

any market for them?

Play 1s should still work fine with the S2 app - mine certainly do! If you're having issues try giving them a factory reset and re-adding them.

Tenner, posted, for both (having just spent all my pocket money on an ERA 100, that'll hopefully be here tomorrow)

My Sonos experience is OK again. I'll only buy cheap second hand now though as it's served as a reminder that all smart speakers are only a bankruptcy or product management decision away from bricking.

How bricky? As in, absolutely non-responsive, nothing will get them to work (or the only sign of life is a rapidly flashing white light)? Or can't get them to work properly with the app(s) consistently?

If it's the former, they may be eligible for the 15% upgrade discount - something like you tell Sonos, they issue you a 15% off voucher - so someone would probably buy them for a few quid.

If it's the latter, there's definitely a market. They're compatible with the latest app and the S1 app and the sound isn't bad - someone out there will want them!

I've a number of Play 1s and they're 100% happy - I wonder what happened to them?

The Play 5 was a victim of the cull as it, along with a number of other products, didn't have enough memory for the firmware that was being brought out at the time.  As you say though - still work fine in isolation.

Well it arrived, and working very nicely within a couple of minutes of coming out of the box. Impressed so far, and pondering how to get more of them around the house, long may that continue

Oooh, once you get started and get into the multiroom setup, it's quite addictive. Especially as there are a fair few available secondhand on ebay etc

It is. And don't feel you have to be restricted to Sonos, in my house some rooms have Sonos, some have Homepods. All play nicely together via Airplay - I just send the audio wherever I want (while very rarely using the Sonos app).

On the market for old Sonos hardware question, I've saved well over a grand on purchasing new kit by buying old kit on eBay to allow me to qualify for the 30% upgrade discount.
