I'm getting my hob hooked up tomorrow, I've not agreed a price so what would be reasonable? The hob is about 2 feet from the has pipe so it should be v quick and simple. I'm thinking £80, any thoughts? It's in Edinburgh.
regardless of cost make sure the gas fitter has a Gas Safe ID card (used to be Corgi) coz he or she ain't allowed to do it otherwise
Why come on here and ask what a tradesman you have already instucted should charge? Ask the tradesman before he does the job!
If you don't, you are leaving yourself wide open to being overcharged.
Tradesmen get a lot of stick, in part due customers not understanding what is involved in performing the required task(s) and not knowing what a reasonable sum is to make it worth his while. You are not only paying for his time, but his expertise. He has studied and qualified to reach a level where he can certify gas installations. Don't expect him to have made all that effort and gone to great expense for nothing!
There are other considerations; one small job in a morning prevents him doing a whole morning's work, so expect to pay half a day's money at least.
If you want cheap bills, find a friend who is qualified and who will give you mates rates!
£80 sound fair imo
al is simply asking for an indication of a reasonable range of cost so he doesnt get r@ped once the job is donem although i cannot beleive that a city center plumber would think of doing this 😆
think thats around what i paid btw. There is NO way i am paying half a days for something that takes 1-2hrs tops have an hourly rate and stick to it
Pretty sure I paid £60 last time we had to do this (couple of years back tho.)
£80 sounds fair to me too for a simple job.
I paid £70 earlier this year to get a cooker connected, took him less than an hour to do.
Thanks all
Grumpbob - he's gonna call me with a price before doing the work, and I am not looking for cheapness, although given I called him on Friday and he's coming on Monday morning, so I doubt he's losing a day's work - his base is round the corner.
It cost me £70 for your FYI, £5 under the limit I set him!
