I’ve run out of Mach 3 blades, so before I re-invest - has anyone tried these and are they anything other than par to a Mach 3 and worth the price? I’m thinking of a purchase not a sub,

I use cornerstone, harry,s pricing seems hard to get to grips with, what you end up paying seems higher than they seem to suggest unless I’m reading it wrong.

Cornerstone seems to be more up front about ongoing costs.

I've also thought about trying this "direct " shaving through Harry's or Cornerstone in the past ..but I can go days without shaving ( working from home )so it's just easier to keep buying off the shelf ..as needed.
If there was a significant reason to do so in terms of quality ..then maybe ..but so far I have resisted the hype / bullshit..a blade is a blade and Gillette still works for me ..

just buy a double edged safety razor, and blades. Ten blades for £1.50? Get a decent actual razor do £25. Better shave, better for the environment, and a lot cheaper. What's not to love.

I'm using them!

As good as Mach 3's IMO, don't seem to clog up as easily either so you can string out using the same one for longer as well.

or get one of these and keep using your Mach 3s, but get many more shaves out of each one:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Razorpit-RP-O-B-Razor-Blade-Sharpener/dp/B004W2UMDW

I get 30 shaves per blade, easy.

in what sense? They cut the hair at skin level. They may not cut below skin level (due to a lack of pulling a hair half out), but then they don't cause ingrowing hairs either.

However, each to their own. Personally I'm all for bits of metal being recycled rather than four quid little bits of plastic (and metal) being chucked away

Get the Hydro 3, or the vibrating handle from the Hydro 5 pack and then the Hydro 3 blades as they clear better.

They don't have that stupid aloe lube strip that the mach 3 and others have that wears and causes most of the drag that makes you think you should change the blade cartridge, and they are usable when their lube system has emptied, just use them with King Of Shaves Serum.

Therefore they last a lot longer than Mach 3 and similar. I use them for a couple of weeks or more before feeling they need a change. The vibrating handle is useful for the trickier bits.

The blade cartridge is also a lot less flimsy than the mach 3, something I noticed this morning as I used a mach 3.

But feel free to ignore this and just stick with the inferior Mach 3 system as that seems to be the choice of STW...

This. Cartridge razors are a mug's game.

"The first blade shaves incredibly close, the second closer still!" What's the point of the first one, then?

In the sense that it's a much nicer shaving experience. But as you say each to their own.

unless you are in a hurry...

Currently I use a Braun wet & dry electric in the shower, followed by a final pass with the hydro 3, just using normal soap. Nice and fast.

The catridge last for weeks like this, can't remember when I last changed it.

So these Safety razors... I have childhood memories of my Dad wandering around with bits of tissue stuck all over his face - is this outcome still likely?

I used safety razors 30 years ago when I didn't have the money to spend on proper razors that work. They were okay but the shave was nowhere near as nice as a modern blade. I wouldn't go back to them even if I craved the authentic heritage shaving experience, using shaving soap does that for me.

When you have skin issues and moles on your face the Freddy Krueger effect is at the max if you use a “safety” razor.

Mach 3 disposables for me, they don’t slice my moles off. 😥

I did read once the best shave is probably using traditional soap with a proper brush after heating up your face (with a hot cloth or I just shave straight after a shower) then use a modern Mach3 or similar razor. The prep is the key as with most things!!

At the moment I'm with beard but when I shave it's with a standard safety razor. I did use one of the cartridge type razors for a while but didn't see/feel any improvement in the end result. (no moles or similar)

I think the heating up the face thing allows the skin to become slightly more flexible and lets the hair follicles move outward a little so that when you shave you cut slightly lower down the hair. Once you cool your face down the follicles shrink back and the ends of the hairs are now below the skin so everything feels extra smooth. Might be complete bunkum 😆

you can get razors that cut closer, or leave a bit.

As I have sensitive skin (the main reason for going this route in the first place), I use a extremely mild one that leaves a small amount of stubble. And only shave twice a week. Some blades seem to be better than others - trial and error unfortunately; the most lauded Japanese ones aren't as good for me as some dodgy Egyptian ones.

This is what I'm using. You can get similar things over here, but I started off with one of these. Both very good.

I am generally the most cack handed person alive (can't do anything without bleeding), but I've not cut myself on either since the first attempt. But I can now go out after shaving without being embarrassed by a face that looks like the inside of a watermelon.

Only downside I can see is you can take the blades in plane hand luggage.

Styptic pencil is what you need - they work very well, although do leave some white stuff on you when they dry, which you need to brush off :

I've been using Harry's razors for about 3 years, they were a gift from my father in law in the US. About as good as a Gillette Fusion one you've used the blade a few times, and last ages (I think my current blade is about 3 months old) but fresh blades seem determined to rip your skin to pieces.

I've spent a couple of years trying out the new customer deals with Harrys and Cornerstone etc.

They seem OK but ultimately they are still multi-blade razors and I start to suffer ingrowing hairs.

Have reverted back to my DE razor for the last few months and I think I'd rather suffer the occasional nick than unhooking ingrowing hairs from my inflamed neck!

I tried Harry’s and Cornerstone but both of them fell well short of a Gillette Fusion and I missed the “edge” blade on the back of the Gillette cartridge.

I stumbled across the Doric razors on Amazon a few months back and the shave is pretty spot on - and also includes the “edge” blade on the back.

The blades last a few weeks and cost wise are cheaper than Gillette and about the same as Harry’s taking into account how long they last.

I've tried every type of cartridge razor from the cheapest to the most expensive but suffer ingrowing hairs with all of them, the more blades it has the worst it tends to be.

A month after i started using a proper safety razor i stopped getting ingrowing hairs, i get the odd nick but skin on neck is so much better, i do i find that you have to try a few different blades, some seemed "too" sharp, but once you settle on a good one and get technique right, then they are ace and so much cheaper.

Well, after reading all this I was going to stick with the Mach 3 - I can't be arsed to go through a learning curve or long winded morning process to shave again.

And then lo! Within a Parcel this morning was a Cornerstones voucher so an engraved handle and six cartridges are on their way - £4.

I'll test it out and of course I can cancel and revert if necessary.

You can get 8 mach 3 blades from amazon for under £12 (£1.49 a blade) or 8 fusion blades for £15 (£1.87). If you subscribe on once a month right up to six monthly basis then you get them a bit cheaper which brings them closer to some of the other options above.

Do they have the 'edge' blade on the back as mentioned above as I need this. Tried the aldi triple blade things and they were good but lacked the edge blade.

Edge blade? Like one single blade for neat sideburns etc?
No. But I've not found that a problem.
But I tend to use clippers for that sort of thing and shave to finish up.

We, Mrs Wachowchow and I, often listen to the Adam Buxton podcasts. He has advertised these and offers a discount code to get a free sample pack.

Guess what I got for Christmas? I have had a full beard for over 5 years.

Review please Krypton ..more so if you like them ..

Well, my £4 intro pack arrived:

2018-01-05_02-54-57

Razor has a nice heft to it also is shiny, so remains to be seen if that equates to slippery. Came with 5 extra value cartridges and the red hinged cartridge "cover" you see on the left.

Heres a blade comparison with the Mach 3:

2018-01-05_02-55-19

Of course the (bottom) Cornerstone cartridge has the precision blade on the reverse.

I'll be shaving tomorrow morning so will update on actually shave then.

I went with FFS for my legs for a while. Found that the hefty metal handle made it more likely to break the blades if it got dropped in the shower. Decided to get a razorpit and use some old gillette blades I found in the other bathroom and have saved myself a load of money with zero change in performance.

It does. I had no issues at all with Mach 3's so unless a wondrous shaving outcome happens I too shall be ordering those from Amazon when the Cornerstone ones run out.

You know the way some of us are really into bikes? Well my dad is really into shaving stuff. Has tried them all and has a vast collecting of blades from all over the world. Buys his soap/gel/foam/lotion from all over the globe and has them neatly presented in the bathroom in order of the world's best, 2nd best etc. Spends a fortune on this pre-shave stuff but swears the cheap double blade razors are the best. Has various grades of denim strips (i bring him round my old jeans) cut to clean them after - with the blade direction obvs. Says doing this makes then last for months of daily use.

He's 80 but has the face (the bit you shave anyway) of a 30yr old. Makes me feel his face every time i call round 😆

Ive started using Harrys razors, they have recently changed the design of the blade and now have the back bit as well. I've found them very comfortable and give a good shave. If used with a razor pit they are lasting for ages too. Im pretty pleased.

Those Cornerstone ones say
Please note, although our razors are perfect for your face, we do not recommend using them for head-shaving.
I've never seen that on any razor before.

I gave up on the Harry’s blades after a 6 months perseverance.

The blade was to aggressive and made my face feel irritated. Also the back blade (for below nose) would cut me when using the first 3-4 times with a new cartridge.

Back with Gillette and couldn’t be happier.

DE razor for me after trying all sorts over the years.

I get bad ingrowing hairs and a very irritated neck which stopped as soon as I started using a DE razor.
I think it's because the shave isn't quite as close.
I tried a variety pack of blades and settled on the Wilkinson Sword ones. I think a pack of 50 cost me about £8.

well I didn't cut myself. 🙂

As I'm spotting a short boxed style beard currently, I used the back precision blade. to clean up the edges I've never used one before - bear that in mind. Overall I think the Cornerstone gives me a smoother shave than Gillette after the first pass. Under my chin/neck I normally have to reverse pass (shave upward) to get smooth there.

Sharp Gillettes also feel precarious around my Adams apple too, and I often nick myself with a new cartridge - not so with the Cornerstone.

I've some slight redness at the lower edges of my beard, but thats the area I used the precision/back blade. Next time I'll avoid it and use the normal side as I would with the Mach 3 and see if that reduces it.

So far then, all good.

Doesn't it twist your lemon ,when one's partner shaves their bits with a cartridge you have used only once?!
