...IT'S ELFIN'S ARCHITECTURAL APPRECIATION THREAD!!!!!! ๐
Right, as an attempt to be a bit topical, hows about military installations? Y'know, cos the Americans claimed to have found some bearded old man in a fortified compound. So how's about military buildings; fortresses, training establishments, barracks, temporary structures, that sort of thing. Can be buildings that are now in use for other reasons, but must be originally for military use. Not so much castles though, cos we'll do that another time. Might be a challenging one, this.
Ok so.

Stayed here a few years ago - Fort Clonque on Alderney, now run by the Landmark Trust - great place.
And then there's 'Bovi'
Fort Bovisand, just inside Plymouth Breakwater. It's been an on and off and on again dive centre business since the 80s. Did many a dive trip to/past there (and an underwater explosives course in the harbour which was a hoot).
Anzio bridgehead - then and now*
It was just before dawn
One miserable morning in black 'forty four.
When the forward commander
Was told to sit tight
When he asked that his men be withdrawn.
And the Generals gave thanks
As the other ranks held back
The enemy tanks for a while.
And the Anzio bridgehead
Was held for the price
Of a few hundred ordinary lives.
*the architecture is in the far back ground of the second image - dull concrete blocks of flats

Bak nau!
Once again, some fantastic examples. Always love Robgarrioch's little chapel, and I'm quite excited by debaser's oil tanks! Fabulous example of hidden and virtually unknown stuff. I woon't have known about that if it weren't for your input. And loads of other stuff too.
Thought this might be a challenging thread, but yet again, STWers come up trumps. Excellentage. ๐
