Our house is 202 years and was once two cottages. There is an old central chimney that extends up into the loft which was part demolished when a new roof was fitted a couple of years ago.

I was going up there earlier to get a box of soldiers out for my lad to play with and dislodged this when I pushed back the hatch.

It fell trough that hatch and hit me in the head. Luckily I dropped forwards onto the ladder, if I had gone over backwards it would have been head first down the stairs and, I suspect, game over.

Shaking like a leaf and my head is bloody killing me!

I didn't think I'd need it when poking my head through the loft hatch! Next time I'll wear one of these.

Hmmmm, I think you are being a bit naive to just assume it was an accident. It seems unlikely that a brick would move itself into a position to do such harm. A full blown Poirotesque investigation is required.
Why was your son so keen for you to get those old toy soldiers out of the loft?
Where was your wife at the time?
Who benefits most in the event of your death?

Flipping the hatch up knocked it loose.

I think I'm going to have a black ear in the morning.

Have you signed up for a life insurance policy recently? How much does it pay out? And to who? If its a decent sum you can probably expect a few more 'mishaps' like this - you know, rugs casually laid across the open cellar door, toaster perched on the edge of the bath, drain cleaner stored in an old gin bottle, honey badger in the sock draw, that kind of thing.

Why do they always put loft hatches at the top of stairs?

Because they would be pretty useless at the bottom of the stairs.

they'd be really useful if they were at the bottom of the stairs... you could have a secret passageway within the walls spiralling up to the loft. Like something out of Five go to Smugglers Top.

That would indeed be brilliant - or spiffing or whatever "five" say

mind' it'd be a bugger to insulate, so you'd have to have some sort of hatch at the top to seal off any draughts

Going to MTFU. Bunged some Vaseline over it and parked myself in front of the TV.

Hand up

Aquaplaned at about 70 in the outside lane of the A1(M) on the way home earlier.

Continued the rest of the journey at a slightly slower pace. And my tyres are fine there was just a lot of water across the lane!

Yeah. I think that my shoulder took the brunt of it because it is a bit sore today. Got a big scuff behind my right ear too.

Sure that's not where someone gave you a clip round the ear for not wearing a hard hat? 😉
