[Closed] Halfords - "Winter clearout" but prices not reduced

Tonight I was getting a new car seat for my son from Halfords. Near the checkout they had a clothes stand titled "Winter clearout - prices from £5"

They had some Dare2be flouro lightweight windproof jacket, the one at the front had a label £10 so I selected right side and paid for it. It went through the till at full price £30). When I returned to the store and for a refund, the manager said it was just the item at the front that was reduced as it had marks, the others were all full price and my only choice was to return the item for a refund.

I pointed out to him that the sign was misleading and he just said the sign says prices from £10.

Are they allowed to have displays like this?

Cheers
Paul

The sign seems accurate "prices from £10" ...but very misleading when associated with a sign saying "winter clearout"

Halfrauds is maybe not a misnomer?

"from" is definitely the key word here (as is "up to" in other circumstances - although thats two words)

You shouldn't be surprised that the garment cost more than £5 or £10 but the implication was that all the garments on the rail would have been reduced to some degree. If they weren't thats not what you'd understand a 'clear out' to mean even if they've studiously avoided the word 'sale'.

You can point that out to them but you can't get a better result than your money back which you've been offered.

You lost the moment you bought anything from that place. Return the item and get your money back.

I've noticed similar sharp practice from Tesco regarding misleading shelf label promotions; and also Mountain Whorehouse coming up on the rails. The latter being notorious for offering items at double the price of equivelents sold elsewhere and 'reducing' them by 50% back to the price they expect to sell at in any case. The local branch were at it again this week with a 'half price sale'. On enquiring I was informed this did not mean the 'discount' prices were further halved.

Almost every shop I can think of does this at sale/clearance time.

It's a bit rubbish, but to be expected.

Are there times when shops don't have ongoing 'sales'.

I went to my local store. Nothing suitable for me but bought my sister a Gore Bikewear short sleeve top, rrp £50 labelled up at £5 with a little red sticker, went through the till at £15 but fortunately the guy noticed and adjusted the price so I didn't have to question it. I can see how people get caught out if the labelled price doesn't match the price on the system.

Euro car parts do it all the time with their 'massive sale. Up to 50% off everything'. Then just about everything you look at has about 1% off. They make it even harder to find the deals by insisting you put your car reg in which narrows the results massively.

Halfords sell quite a lot of their stuff at massively over their worth so they can sell them at half price in their sales. Particularly kids bikes and other bso crap that they flog out at Christmas. They'll stock it for the minimum time at top whack then chop the price in half so those that don't know what they're buying think they're getting a bargain.
