How do those aftermarket necks stack up compared with real Fender ones? When you compare a Squier to a MIM to a USA Fender neck, you can feel the difference. It's not often a huge difference. MIM necks are about £350 IIRC while USA necks are ~£600. Warmoth necks are highly regarded and range from about £250 to £600 depending on spec (not that you can buy them easily in the UK). Obviously those ones eddiebaby posted are way cheaper than any of those options.

I'd like to build up a partscaster but I can't shake the feeling they'd be a bit rubbish, quality wise.

I liked the feel of the one guitar anatomy supplied but it had some grain defects on the front of the headstock so I sent it back. The backs on my US Strats are fantastic but obviously pricey. My Vintera Roadworn neck felt right but the body was screwed up so that went back.

I was looking at building a tele earlier this year, but even looking at used parts I couldn't get it to stack up cost wise vs buying a complete guitar and modding it.

I'd look at something like an East Coast tele and tweak it...

Of the necks I own I can't say some are much better, they're all different, but not necessarily better. A Harley Benton gets played a lot but will only fit an HB body as its heel is thicker (unless you are confident about taking a plane to it). The MIM and Squier Classic vibe maple necks are nearly identical, the MIM rosewood a little chunkier. I gently wet and dry the finish if it feels sticky.

The Warmoths are what you spec. Junior's stage Tele has a vintage modern C ten inch radius maple with gloss nitro and stainless frets - simply perfection if you like Fender's C necks. I have two modern necks, a C and a shedder. I regret not speccing stainless frets and the matt nitro soon glosses with play so I should have bought gloss. 10-12 radius on both, I prefer it over Fender's 9.

I should point out that I'm not keen on rolled edges or overly rounded fret ends which in part explains my love of Warmoths - they leave you to round the frets yourself. Some Fenders are over-done IMO.

Wow, they're a great price.

The Squier Bullet series guitars are an excellent base for mods.

My Squier Bullet Mustang has a neck as good as guitars that cost 10 more. Really lovely shape and finish.

I agree the basic Squiers are great guitars and worthy of upgrading. What they are not so good as is as a donor. The parts aren't exactly the same as MIM, Classic Vibe, Fender US and Warmoth and require some woodwork/shimming to get the neck in place and the deck height right - just my experience.

Wow, they’re a great price.

So cheap I was going to buy one just for 5 string open G.
Sadly I saw the baritone tele thing and needed the money towards that.

So views please…. humbuckers for a telecaster build.. is it irongear or are the cheaper options (Vanson, Warman, Wilkinson) worth a try? looking for something in the middle not thrash metal.

Haven't tried their humbuckers, but have been very pleasantly surprised by the set of Tonerider pickups I put in my old Korean Strat last year (Classic Blues, in case you were wondering), good value at ~£80 for a set. Humbuckers seem to be a little cheaper for a pair with exposed bobbins, or a little more expensive for a pair with covers

My view is i am building a partscaster because it interests me, i have a Toolroom Engineering background so i can (in theory) work to high tolerances.

I am interested in how "good" i can get the guitar to work, i plan on buying some tools including fret dresser etc.

I am no great shakes as a guitar player but interested in the mechanics, i have a joe root (copy) telecaster body which i will add the tone control back on and coil tap it. Plan on a rosewood neck and good quality hardware (string through body)

This is more of a mental challenge than a parts caster build.

First choice is electric or acoustic blues. If it's the latter then a beat up steel string and a bottle neck. If it's electric then a Gibson ES335 through a Fender 57 deluxe amp.

Or just about any guitar with 6 steel strings. The blues is in your head and your fingers if you've got it (I haven't)

How about one of mine?

Three guitars for sale.

They are all lovely guitars, I’ve just got too many and not enough time to play them all.

Harley benton CST 24 in Emerald. 2019

https://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_cst_24t_emerald_flame.htm

This currently has a set of Bareknuckle pickups- a mule and a black dog.

£150 with the original pickups.

£370 with the Bareknucles in. They are currently £300 a set

It has been upgraded to locking tuners.

It has some bird stickers over the dots. These can stay or come off for sale. My wife called it the lizard so I stuck some eyes on the control knobs. These can be replaced with the originals or the bird knobs that are pictured.

Plays great, feels great. Condition is mostly good. There is no damage to the body that I can see. In the sun for the photos today I noticed some dye marks on the back where it looks like the original finish has run a bit. In 3 years I’ve never noticed this before. There are a few marks to the fretboard where I have lowered some frets to allow a very low action.

Ibanez Joe Satriani JS100WH

I’ve had this since 2011 and it’s been great. I’ve never gigged and it seems unlikely that I will in the next few years.

This is a white Ibanez JS100 from 2003. They only made the JS100 in white in 1993/94 and 2003/04, so it's quite an unusual color. This guitar was made in Korea, and features a great neck (slim and modern but not a skinny shred neck like the Ibanez Wizard) and the Ibanez Edge Pro II bridge, which is vastly better than the earlier Lo-TRS II, and a definite improvement on the current Edge III bridge. It holds its tuning far better, and you can fit the strings without having to cut the ball ends off. Basswood body, maple neck, rosewood fretboard, 22 medium frets, and the "Joe Satriani" moniker on the 21st fret. Very comfortable guitar to play - it's light and ergonomic, and balances well. Trem arm is provided.

As stock, this guitar came with weak-sounding Ibanez Infinity pickups. However, this guitar has been upgraded to feature color-matched white DiMarzio D-Sonic bridge pickup and Air Norton neck pickup, as used by Brad Delson from Linkin Park and (until recently) John Petrucci. They transform this guitar to a whole new level of sonic excellence. They're fantastic sounding pickups - more meaty sounding than you'd expect and very versatile. I use these pickups on both of my main guitars as well - they sound awesome. The pickups have a pull-up coil-tap on the tone knob, so you can also get those single-coil sounds when needed. It's set up for (and fitted with) D'Addario XL120 9-42 strings. There are currently a few rust marks on the bridge pick up. I only noticed these in the sun (hence the sale).

This guitar is 19 years old, and has been played plenty, so it's not perfect. There are a few minor marks on the finish, and a couple of small imperfections. But considering its age, it is in AMAZING condition. It comes complete with a matching white DiMarzio Clip-lock strap.

Joe Doe by Vintage Guitars Strat.
https://www.joedoeguitars.com/product-page/salty-dog

This is lovely, I’m just not so keen on single pickup sounds.

Other than the relicing it came with its as new.

The neck has had a very very light sand to smooth it.

I liked the idea of a reliced guitar with a backstory.

At age 17, Bill Downey started his career in the US Navy deep in the bowels of the USS America Supercarrier as a boiler technician. Over the decades and through numerous conflicts, the Vietnam War (1955 to 1973), the Lebanon Crisis (1983), the Persian Gulf War (1990 to 1991), Downey rose to the rank of Chief Engineer. Dedicating his whole life to the Navy meant forfeiting the chance to start a family, but Downey was not alone in this world - his faithful companion was a white electric guitar which he won in a gambling den in Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam in 1963.

As well as being a slick guitar player, Downey was also an avid collector of sailor tattoos, getting himself inked at every major port. When he finally ran out of space on his body, Downey used his trusty electric guitar to provide extra real estate. “My guitar’s been with me so long, it’s part of me now. If my ship ever sinks, that guitar will either be a paddle or a float.” In 1996 the USS America was decommissioned, which led Downey to retire and settle on land for the first time in his life where he formed blues funk band, “Howlin’ Albatross”.

@tall_martin That Ibanez JoeS is gert lish! Always preferred them to the JEMs.

Finally got a pedal I ordered on New Years Day. The sting of the wait was somewhat alleviated by the fact the price had dropped by £20 since I ordered it.

Its a TC Electronic Stereo Chorus Flanger and it choruses divinely and the flange is pretty good too. The weak spot on the Kemper (other than me) is the Chorus, Flanges and Trem IMO and this fils the gap nicely.
Dog sitting at my brother's for a week so had to take my computer, so I loaded up the minitravel pack and am set for a few days noodling.

Well yeah 🙄 but it's 66 pages long and i don't want to scroll through that lot hunting out the occasional vid.

Some of the best times i've had in life were at a friends gaff/studio/parties and when they compered in the Halt bar in Glasgow's west end .My mate Zac was probably one of the best guitarists playing the circuit at that time (mid to late 90's)

So from these experiences ive always loved it as an instrument.

We kind of lost touch. He went full pro, tours moved south and just havent seen him in 20 years, but fond memories indeed 😀

Actually I've just discovered he's a YT page. Dumbo me just never thought to check that place.

https://www.youtube.com/user/zacster71/featured

I wish I could play like this, but my poor skills on the strings just torture people ears 😆

There’s some more band clips of you scroll back on that insta feed.

I’ve posted this already but had a weekend with the family away a month or so ago and learnt the solo from Alive by pearl jam. Would have blown my 17 year old mind to think I could play this someday!

( it’s not perfect but close enough for a new learn )

Yeah, but playing is stretching it for me, more like making noise!
I've had a few weeks without playing, was ill, lost interest in playing (actually, doing anything at all) but I've picked a guitar up again and will be auditioning for The Skids soon 🤣

Such a classic song. The solo is super fun to play and easier than it sounds….

There are a couple of lessons and play along backing tracks on youtube if you Google

Hi folks, I've bought an old Randall combo that my son has been using. I know nothing about amps, but he's put it up for sale and it's become apparent that only one of the speakers are wired up.

So I'm trying to work out how it should be wired so that I can sort it.

The 2 pictures here show how it is at present, and the 2 options for wiring it properly.

Option 1 - Single amp output with connection between speakers using blade and spade connectors (in red).
Option 2 - Use both amp outputs – 1 for each speaker. No connection between speakers (in blue)
Any thoughts on which it should be and anything else I need to consider? I'm ok with a soldering iron and crimping kit, but I don't want to damage anything.

@Simon & Ajantom

Thats excellent, keep posting.

From my own experience on the acoustic its bloody difficult and take years to master, so anyone who plays will always get respect from me.

@Ajantom - Cramps is good, my sister was a big fan bitd and its nice to hear it again.

Keep up the good work 😀

I did once play Wish you were here at an acquaintances Teepee back in the wilds. I was shown the chords for it, which is quite simple really, and was playing when 15 drunken Scots started singing along 😆 I went from just doing the chords to being utterly petrified i'd screw it up. 😆

It kind of put me off. Im no good addressing a crowd, or even a handful of people, let alone playing a favoured song to a large bunch of them.
