I am getting an LG GT505 next week that comes with a GPS receiver built in.
The software it uses is "wisepilot" which looks good but is only a demo version, the full version is paid for yearly which i don't want.

Is there any third party software which could be used on an LG phone?

Depends on the phone's OS; is it WinMob, or Symbian? There's quite a few for WinMob, but only ViewRanger for Symbian, to my knowledge. There might be others, like Nokia Maps on Symbian, but that might be restricted to Nokia phones.

as you can see, it's WinMob 6, so ViewRanger's out, and in any case that's a different type of GPS; the phone's supplied mapping is turn-by-turn street level mapping for car use, like Navigon and TomTom, whereas ViewRanger, Anquet, MemoryMap, etc are Ordnance Survey mapping, a totally different beast. The mapping with the phone is a thirty-day trial, then you have to pay, but you'll have to pay for any equivalent alternative anyway.

You could use Memory Map and Tomtom with it. I've got an HTC Tytn II that runs both and I think they're excellent.

I have Googlemaps on my Nokia - it's quite good for finding streets and stuff, no use really away from roads alough you do get the satellite imagery too.

Hi,

As posted above you can use

Memory Map - full OS map navigation with tracks, route planning etc.

Tom Tom - road navigation, gets you to the trailhead.

GPS Cycle Computer ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=424423) - Free program that works like a normal bike computer with GPS. Includes auto start stop and you can also load up maps to it (though it is a bit of a faff to do that).

RunGPS ( http://www.rungps.net/) - not free, but this is an excellent app. It has numerous screen configurations to show speed, distance, calories burnt, maps etc etc. You can even get it to speak to you telling you just how slow you are!!

Regards
