Best not tell you that the mobile phone companies have the ability to record all phone conversations then.

@ds... and they can track your movements, and your ISP can read all your emails, and....

But they don't because it'd cost a fortune and achieves nothing.

Though of course lawful interception is a whole different ballgame.

AnyCut will show you if it's on your Android device; it'll give you an option to link to IQAgent (and IQ-something-else).

Doesn't seem to be on mine (HTC Sensation on O2) so I don't know how widespread it is.

Best not tell you that the mobile phone companies have the ability to record all phone conversations then.

The biggest problem I can see (other than its 'hidden' existence) is that it appears to send sensitive data via plaintext. They deny this of course. How true that is and how much of a practical security risk there is remains to be seen, but it certainly smells like it might be class-action lawsuit time.

Carrier IQ have a press statement here.

While we look at many aspects of a device’s performance, we are counting and summarizing performance, not recording keystrokes or providing tracking tools.

Who to believe, hm?

I like how they sued the guy trying to expose their potentially illegal activity.

Nasty stuff.

Why anyone would think theyre NOT doing all this is beyond me!

Because it is illegal??

El Reg are reporting that iPhones also have this software installed, though it doesn't have quite as much access under iOS and can be turned off:

Just installed it on my Desire. How do you get it to show this IQ thingy? It's not listed in the Activity list to make a short cut, so does that mean I ain't got it?

Ta!

Aye.

I don't know anyone who's found it yet. Much ado about nothing?

I can buy the email addresses of anyone with over x friends.

Yet, there's absolutely no public outcry over such privacy concerns. Can you back up that unsubstantiated claim?

from the samsung facebook page:

Dear Samsung, why do I have illegal spyware (Carrrier IQ) on my phone? Will you update the phone's software to include an opt out option, so my privacy is not invaded?

Samsung UK Hi Scott, this problem has occurred from your Network Provider. You will need to contact them in order to get this explained and rectified.

I thought it was only Australian carriers adding it to their (presumably) contract phones.

I expect to be proven wrong on that.

More info here Coolsmartphone. Doesn't appear to be on Windows Phone, maybe it's a marketing ploy 😉

Here we go.

Carrier IQ not used in the UK.

Vodafone, Orange and O2 told the Guardian on Thursday that they do not install the software in the UK and that to the best of their knowledge it is not shipped in any of the phones they sell. Google has indicated that the software is not included on any of its "flagship" phones

An HTC spokeswoman told the Guardian that a number of the company's Android phones in the US include it at the request of carriers there, but that no European devices have been affected.

The software appears to be installed on all versions Apple's iPhone where it can, with the user's explicit permission, send anonymised diagnostic information back to Apple, for examples when apps crash. However tests by Alasdair Allan, a British programmer, found that it does not have any access to keypad input, and that the data is only sent to Apple. Owners can disable the transmission of data by turning off a setting on the iPhone.

Claims that the software is installed on Nokia phones were rebutted by the Finnish company in a statement: "Nokia is aware of inaccurate reports which state that software from Carrier IQ has been found on Nokia devices. Carrier IQ does not ship products for any Nokia devices, so these reports are wrong."

So, it's a non-story in the UK, apart from on iPhone where it's benign anyway. Figures.

I suspected as much. A lot of freedom in the US is an illusion.

Just checked the settings on my iPhone, where it's turned on, and this is what generally gets sent:
[IMG] [/IMG]
But occasionally you get this:
[IMG] [/IMG]
and it goes on and on and on. I gave up scrolling down interminal amounts of code that refers to an app crash.
If it does what it looks like that screenshot says and helps Apple diagnose problems then I'm happy with that.

It's not on my phone, cos I use android built from the android open source project code. 😉

That said, I wouldn't really care if it was. If anyone want's to read my messages about whether the dog has had his dinner or not then they can feel free.
