In an astonishing turnaround from last night’s announcement, viewed by many as a de facto resignation, Gordon Brown has made the announcement that he is, in fact, to become President, having won a clear mandate in the general election.

At 9:30 this morning, Brown emerged from Number 10 to the awaiting journalists. Brown stated that this highly unusual move was “vital to ensuring the continued economic recovery”, finishing with “I understand fully that this is a controversial move, and anyone who objects, should register their protest in writing, through the formal consultation process.”

Peter Mandelson issued a further statement to press, detailing how, in order to cement the importance of democracy to our society, the UK is now to be known as the Democratic Republic of Britain.

Senior figures with the Household Cavalry and Honourable Artillery Company are believed to have shouted “RAAAAA!” upon hearing the news. Jane’s Information Group believes this is a certain sign that a royalist coup is imminent.
