Hi,

I've been using a GoPro Hero 4 Black in work and they keep dying.

Both times it's been connected to a tripod and only been on for about an hour, with only a few minutes of that recording (in 1080P, not 4K). It's running off a battery eliminator

The 1st time I recorded fine, went to my desk to copy off the footage and in the space of walking 10 feet it had died. Wouldn't turn on or charge, just get really hot!

Went to Currys and got a reluctant exchange. I used the new one yesterday for the same amount of time and the same seems to have happened again.

Surely they should last longer than this!

You reckon I can get another exchange?

I've got four Blacks and they all simply work.
(Getting recent footage onto YouTube seems impossible though. I may have to read the manual.)

Have you tried reformatting the sd card? Mine would only record a couple of minutes of footage before cutting out.

Reformatting the SD card sorted it.

It won't turn on without a SD card in. usually it does.

I'm going to try returning it and have ordered a reconditioned Hero 3+. The 1 star reviews on amazon are an eye opener for the Hero 4!

What kind of power supply are you running it from? If it's a very cheap one it might be badly regulated and damaging your cameras. I had a bootleg iPhone charger kill a touchscreen, and have heard of them killing plenty of Raspberry Pis too.

I'm using a Protastic battery eliminator

Will Currys take back a returned item again?

I've no experience of this, in fact I had never heard of a battery eliminator.

But looking at the link it says to only use without the battery in. Have you removed the battery?

I'm using a Protastic battery eliminator

If it or whatever power source you plug it into have killed two GoPros, I wouldn't let it anywhere near a third no matter what they claim on the product page.

Curry's gave me a refund, amazingly! 🙂 The original 4 that broke last week was just a week away from the year warranty. "Lucky" it broke when it did really. The replacement lasted 4 days....

I've used Hero 3+'s with the same battery eliminator with no issue, recording for hours at a time in hot studio conditions.

The Hero 4 just seemed rubbish TBH. Have they just tried to pack too much into it and it can't cope?

I've ordered a re-conditioned replacement hero 3+ from ebay for 160 quid (with a years warranty). Super! 🙂
