I completely missed any comms from google about this.  But it looks like it's a thing, and from Jan 2026.

I used to use auto forwarding from domain mail to gmail, but they effectively stopped this with increased spam / mail relay detection.  I understand why they chose to do this.

Anyway, does anyone have any creative solutions short of ditching one or the other to consolidate both gmail and third party email.  I like gmail interface (but probably mostly because I'm so used to it), so would like to stay with that, but everything in the cloud with the consolidation on mobile apps and web is pretty handy.

I have been meaning to ditch google anyway, I don't trust them as a company, I meant to do it last year. Frankly it will probably take a couple of years my email is so linked with so many things, but given the current world I want a purely European solution so that might take some investigation. maybe I will just go back to my ISP account, although that then becomes a problem if I change internet providers.

That is a good point about moving away from google with current geo politics.

It isn't just about the "email" company being European, many are still probably hosting their backends on AWS etc.

I think that Telkom actually have a European cloud service based in European datacentres, so they are prime candidates, but I haven't yet looked at it that much, that is just background "casual" information that might be inaccurate.

which was always -and obviously - the point

Whatever the problem, this is never the solution.
