no, i don't mean i've never used it.....
has anybody got a virgin mobile phone and successfully used google maps?
specific situation is nokia n76, google maps works fine with vodafone sim installed. stick in a virgin sim, change the data settings (all browsing etc works) and google maps craps out at "connecting..."
anybody?
thx
Could be some specific Vodafone branding in there. Was Google Maps pre-installed (ie. in firmware). That's how it is on my N78.
If so, you'll have to "de-brand" the phone.
it was originally vodafone so it is branded as such but google maps is just a data connection so it shouldn't make any difference really.
i've spent some time googling this and rumours are that google maps just doesn't work on virgin mobile but nobody has explained why. rumour was also that VM blocked SMTP traffic but that's not true.

Sorry - this is completely wrong. There is an application on your handset. On my N78, it's in firmware which (rather annoyingly) means that I can't download he newer version. I'm waiting for Vodafone to release some updated firmware.
That doesn't preclude the fact that you may be correct about Virgin.
ok.. not wishing to split hairs, but once the app is installed (which it is, cos it works through a vodafone connection) it polls data as required from google to update maps and overlay the location etc.. that aside i've just tried downloading the app again using the virgin data connection and it's failing so you may be right about it needing debranding.
if i break it by debranding can i blame you 🙂
thanks for the pointer

Hee hee. I'm at the "will I or won't I" stage with mine. The risk is that I brick it and get no warranty.
hacked, debranded, updated and google maps works now.
no bricking needed 🙂
