i know i can save an image of the page but i want to save a more detailed route i've plotted. the route covers >300km

doable?

Not sure how but it's def possible - I export routes from Ascent that I have uploaded from my gps and it saves them on google earth in the my places section.

If you have a google mail account, you can access google maps and draw routes, the closer you draw them, the more accurate they measure up....

A route you have already plotted? I am pretty sure you can export it as a .kml which many websites will convert to a .gpx or other.
EDIT-you may have to email it to yourself, not just export it... maybe...

If you've plotted it on GE, just right-click in the LH menu, do a "Save Place as.." and save it as a .kml file.
