After my latest trip to the continent, i am now an espresso convert.

What is the simplest, cheapest, (quickest) way to get a small cup of good coffee at home?

Stove top - or an Aeropress.

Since getting the Aeropress I've stopped using the stove top as I think the Aeropress makes a better cup of coffee; smoother..? Do wonder if the aluminium in the stove top I have might be to blame, have always fancied trying a stainless version.

Is an aeropress a bit of a faff compared to the stove top jobbies?

I stopped using my alloy stovetop after seing how much the alloy in the water pot had corroded. There were a couple of massive pits/holes in the bottom and i can only imaging that all that alloy had ended up in my stomach.

Still use my stainless one though.

I don't like the alloy stove top jobbies, they always collect green growth in the base rings unless you bleach them regularly.

Fancy a stainless but CBA, just make a strong cafetierre as much less hassle.

I don't think so; once done just push out the coffee grounds into the recycling and rinse under tap.

Stove tops do not make espresso, you need an espresso machine with 9bar pressure to make espresso.

+1 for stove top, though the base inside gets horribly discoloured. May need to look at a stainless steel one.

And then buy some of this:

Paper filter.
Funnel
Enamel jug (rinse don't 'wash' after use)
Ground coffee
Hot water left about 1 min after boiling
Pour thru

Not espresso but a good faff free sub. And can be as strong as u like

Another Aeropress user here. No faff at all. Great for camping too.

Aeropress - as a family who had 6 different ways of making coffee in the kitchen, the Aeropress was the one I used every day at work. Minimal faff, tough as ye olde boots and reliable.
Oh - spent 2 years living in Italy and never saw anything other than aluminium stovetops in their kitchens. You just never clean them with anything other than a rinse of water.

Another fan of the aeropress, short of a full on espresso machine I think it's the best option for home coffee.
I have had lots of alloy stove tops in various sizes over the years, french presses, filters, [cheap] espresso machines, now I pretty much only use the aeropress.
That being said, I've friends and family who have those newfangled capsule machines and they are actually quite good... puts on hard hat and takes cover.

Stovetops can give good results but there's a bit of an art to it to get the best results. You need to do it really slowly, so it takes a while.
