Wife needs a new laptop at a cheap ish price but is no slouch when it comes to running exel spreadsheets. Also needs to be able to have a few bits of software running at the same time.
Any recommendations ?

Unless she has used windows 8 and is happy with it, I'd suggest going to a small independent retailer and getting a laptop with windows 7 on it (feel free to ignore all of this if you run Linux or similar).
I found Windows 8 fine for playing films, web surfing etc, but not for actual work stuff.

I've been using an Acer Aspire for 4 years with no trouble (W7).
Cost about £250 when I got it.

put a number against cheapish.
Dell outlet is my normal recommendation for some decent savings.
