I've got the opportunity to get one of these at a decent price on the NHS lease scheme. Anybody on here with advice?

They are quite good around town but I found a 2.0 litre 110 bhp Passat better on fuel on motorway runs as the 1.6 is a bit weedy.
Quiet engine and otherwise a nice car, I had a black estate in sportsline that looked nice.

The thing with the NHS scheme, is the prices are generally better on lower mpg and emissions, etc.

I've one of the older 1.9 jobbies.

Very well sorted car, does 60-70mpg on motorways and on trips out in the highlands, 55-61 otherwise. 6-700m journeys are comfy enough, relaxed and easy to drive. It just does everything well.

It's no sports car, but it's not trying to be.

Although, if I was to buy another car. It would be something like a Passat estate. The boots a decent size, but for my needs I could do with more space.

Sometimes get them as hire cars. Love Golfs, comfy, easy to drive, fuel economy among the best in it's size, decent space inside.

Had 5 golfs the last two were the bluemotion model, was rather disappointed in the build quality on the latest version, and have always found vw customer service rather poor as a result gone with a BMW 116d this time...far better.

My sister has a 1.6 bluemotion Golf estate. Lovely car, and she gets 60mpg which is remarkable considering she only drives windy hilly country roads for 6 or 7 miles at a time, hardly ever goes on motorway and lives up a really big hill.

Hi

Had 3 mk7s the 1.6 gives very slightly better mpg but is gutless above 3000rpm, the 2.0 is far better to drive, very impressive for overtaking, I get 59 to the gallon out of my 2.0 have had 75mpg as the best, did achieve 92mpg over 25 miles in the 1.6, this was me being very sad trying to get 100mpg.

Intelligent cruise control is great, put it on and the car basically drives all you do is steer, it brakes if you are too close to the car in front, however if you are catching a car up the car will slow to match that's cars speed you need to start to overtake earlier, very comfy to drive, sat nav is accurate and easy to use

Comfy to sit in well built feel.

All that salsa says is true. I've got a 63 plate gt spec 2.0tdi and it flys , handles really well, is quiet, comfortable and economic when I leave the loud pedal alone for a bit. Love it

Get dsg if it's available on the bluemotion.

If they're anything like the Mk6, then they're absolutely gutless with uncomfortable seats and slightly bizarre footwell lighting.

If I were after a new economical car, I'd go for the Alfa Giulietta.

Tron, mk7 is a world away from mk6. Having said that, my mk6 was in match spec and the mk7 in gt, but it's a load better.
Still got slightly odd footwell lighting though!

I had a new 1.6l diesel 2.5 years ago for 6 months and did 10k . I only got about 45mpg the whole time I had it and only got more and then only into the low 50s on a run on the motorway

Alfa don't do an economical car - go on the alfa forums - most people 40-45mpg out the diesels, which frankly is a bit tosh on a modern derv lump.

I've got a 1.9jtdm in mine, albeit 58 plate, and I'm happy if I can get 45mpg, and I only get that with motorway cruising.
🙁

I've got a 13 plate Golf 1.6 SE Bluemotion tech and as most have said, the engine is gutless and I wish I'd had the 2.0 really.

Economy is excellent though.

Anybody on here with advice?

Get a BMW 740 with the 4.4V8 instead.
You'll feel like much less of a bitch. 😀

Sbob - I've got a Buell m2 and a Harley Bobber 1.6 for those less bitchy moments 😀 I'm just fed up spunking a hundred quid a week putting diesel in the jeep.

I test drove one of the new ones recently (a friend was having a test drive so I went along too). I stick by my bias that the Golf needs a 2.0 engine really. By all means the car pulled well enough on London roads but having had one small engined Golf many years ago I think the car is quite heavy (due to safety build) and needs a 2.0. If you want a 1.4/1.6 have a look at the new Polo, they are very nice and actually about the same size as the Mark 1 Golf was 'back in the day", again for me a 4 pot is essential the 3 pot motors just feel wrong and run out of steam on the motorway
