Can anyone recommend me their preferred editing software - ideally, a free of charge one

Cyberlink Power Director (although not free). Windows Live Movie Maker is free and does the job.

They do their own software...nothing to fancy but it works. On a pc with windows 7 or above, windows movie maker isn't bad and on a mac, iMovie is apparently not bad...all free.
