I've got an engine warning light on and the fault code is 'glow plug open circuit cylinder 1'

Starts ok and seems to run ok. From what i looked up its just the glow plug has failed?

Will it cause damage if i dont get it fixed soon, or can i leave it for a while (months?!)

Thanks

Depends on the car.

Anything circa 10 years old or less and the glow plugs form part of the emissions control and don't just aid starting.

You'll also find when it's cold and your car needs the glow plugs to start it will run a cylinder down until residual heat gets the dead cylinder up to heat for compression ignition to take place.
