No idea about the facemask although I used to do some pretty awful farts as a kid,
It's a germ thing! If someone has a cold they put one on to stop spreading germs, or if you might come into contact with someone, (i.e. everywhere in public!), with a cold they wear one too.
The public transport is full of them, we stuck out like sore thumbs as the only one's not wearing one - ha!!
