I have seen a couple of rides that Strava buddies have done and wanted to follow the same route....
I go to the map of the ride and click GPX download. When this has downloaded, i drag and drop into my Garmin Etrex 30x. The file appears in track manager and i select it. So far so good. However when i load these routes up, they are not the entire route, but about 3/4 of it.
Any idea what im doing wrong? Ive tried it with more than one person and route amd it seems to truncate it.
Please help!
Ian
If you are trying to import them as routes, I think there's a fairly low limit on the number of points (250 ?).
If it is that, you can use one of the on-line utilities to thin the points out, or import them as tracks (which can have thousands of points).
I’ve had success loading them as courses in the past (.crs)
I found a free gpx to crs converter, called gpx2crs I believe!
Sounds like your downloading them as a GPX Route instead of a GPX Track, Routes have more waypoints and once the limits exceeded the route will stop, Tracks don't have this issue & can be very lengthy without any issue.
I have the same issue with my garmin. For the complete technophobe how do you download ad tracks rather than routes please?
When i go to the download button on the map on Strava it doesnt give me any options (i dont think) other than a .gpx file. I then drop it into the folder in my garmin called GPX.
I will try the gpx2crs utility when i get home.

If you 'export gpx' from Strava it will be a "track" - you just need to make sure you don't try and add it as a "route" in your Garmin.
This is roughly the way I go about it:
http://www.rambler-info.org.uk/gps/howto/ht_load_etrex10.htm
If you download from a Strava activity, it will be a GPX track.
The Etrex 30x should allow up to 10,000 points in a track. Most tracks from Strava will be much less than this. But some could be more, if they were recording 1 point per second, and more than a couple of hours.
There is software to simplify GPX tracks, and reduce the number of points. eg GPSBabel or Garmin Basecamp.
Ok, so when i got home, i had another go at this.....
I went to the athletes profile i was copying and pulled up the map of the route. Instead of clicking DOWNLOAD GPX, i clicked CREATE ROUTE and it the pulled up a route making page. I just clicked SAVE and it created a smaller file than before, which i dragged into the GPX folder in my Etrex 30x.
When i then switched on the Garmin, i was able to see the full route on the map! Hurray!
Thanks to everyone who helped me!
Ian
